I have not had surgery yet and am so very afraid that this surgery is not going to work for me! I am ALWAYS hungry. Not head hunger, but really hungry. I eat and like 1 1/2 to 2 hours later my stomach is growling and I get so hungry that it is really hard for me not to eat.

My Dr. told me that it was because of what I was eating. We changed my diet and still, I am STARVING!! I have been doing the pre-op diet since Oct. and have lost 50lbs. So, I do stick to it, but gosh, I am so tired of being hungry!

I have real problems believing that this surgery will work for me. My Dr. says that I will be super successful because I have shown great restriction already. I guess I am just afraid of failure...again!

Do those of you that have had surgery lose your hunger issues? If that would just go away, I would be fine. I am not one that eats just to eat, I eat because I am seriously hungry.

Thanks for any advice,

Kelly

Try taking a PPI (like Zantac or Prilosec) it may just be stomach acid?

I am 9 months out and I still take one in the morning and one in the evening. I found it killed what I had thought was hunger but it was actually stomach acid.

Might work for you.

I have taken Nexium for years. I really don't think that is it, but thanks!

I just think I have a huge stomach and never feel satisfied!

I used to be like you, hungry all the time. Since my surgery, I have not been hungry. I have wanted to eat things, but that is head hunger rather than true hunger and I can distract myself so much easier now than before surgery. It has been a revelation and a blessing not to think about food all the time.

thanks foxbins, i hope that this will be my result. i hear or should say read that some people still have the hungry issue. if i weren't hungry all of the time, i would be fine. i just want it to STOP!! it is so irritating!

Right there with ya. But I have found, that the more Protein rich the meal, the longer it takes before the beast complains again. I hate my stomach. It's always whining and bi**hing at me for something.

Maybe the nexium isn't working for you, for this particular problem, severe hunger. I used to have it 'occasionally' pre-VSG but my doctor could never tell me why. Then I had the surgery and the severe hunger feelings got worse, and the doc said it was acid. None of the PPI's helped either. chewable gaviscon is the only thing so far the quells the feeling some, not totally.

So yes, after VSG you can still be hungry.

see sleevesearch, that is what i am afraid of!!! i do not want to go through all of this just to have surgery and still feel this way!! i mean, i know i will NEVER be able to eat as much as i once did after surgery, but if i can eat all day long, then wont the amount still be the same??

i am so afraid that it is just not going to work for me. i pray that it will, but i just hate not knowing. there are so many that say that their actual hunger issues go away, but some say that they are still there. i just don't know!!!

Kelly, The BIG difference is the restriction. There is absolutely no way you can eat the same amounts post-surgery than you did pre-surgery. That alone will allow you to lose weight. Now the challenging thing is, you can eat, fill up your little pouch, and then still feel hungry - that is what happened to me. That is why I use the chewable gaviscon during these times. It helped quell the hunger feelings. It was worse early on from 2 - 5 months and I was quite distressed about it, thinking I was going to feel that way for the rest of my life. Now 7 months out, it happens ALOT less, I think my body is healing and acid production is adapting. I think I've only chewed on gaviscon once this month.

Good Luck! Maybe you will be in the majority around here and your hunger will be eliminated with this surgery. One never knows, as we are all different.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
