Clear Fluids...What Makes Protein Supplement Okay?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved back on Monday and am on clear fluids for another something days and I've been adding in my Protein supplements. I opened my "unflavored" unjury yesterday and tried that...it's okay and all. So, here's my question: What makes a Protein supplement okay to be used for clear fluids? I've scanned through older threads on similar topics and find that basically, "if I can still see through it, it is okay" as the consensus, but not "chocolate". Why? What about other protein supplements? I had stocked up on a variety of sample packs of powders and now I'm paranoid to open any of them in case I can't use them! I did open one and when I saw it looked just like the Unjury one, I decided to give it a go and it is yummy! (Jay Rob whey Protein Pina Colada). I do have two chocolate ones, but what makes them not okay to be used for clear fluids? What about my Pomegranate cranberry? Or the Blueberry? What about the two gluten free ones I thought I'd give a go?

Anyway, I was just hoping someone here would actually "know".

Just my thoughts, I have no idea if I am correct, but as long as you are mixing your Protein with Water or fruit juice I think you're okay. Many RTD Protein Shakes have milk solids in them, maybe your chocolate powder one does too, I don't know...but I think it's whatever opaque components are in "thin" or "full" liquids that we are supposed to watch early on. Stick with the fruit-flavored ones until thin liquids and I think you're good. I couldn't get protein down until thins, anyway, so you're lucky!

I know you had your surgery a little while back, but IDS New Whey puts out a product that comes in a 3.5 oz tube and has 42 grams of protein per tube. It was a life saver for me - I have done 2 tubes per day and have had no problems with malnutrition at all. Do an internet search for the best prices and know that some places offer free shipping. The more protein you get in the healthier you will be and the more weight you will lose. ;-)

Best of luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
