Just getting started (Pre-Op)

Recommended Posts

My name is Lilu I am 40 years old. In June 2010 I was reading a magazine talking how weight loss surgery could help me with my diabetes. In Oct 2010 I finally decided to talk to a weight lost surgeon and he suggest that I have the sleeve done. The reason I took these steps was because no matter what i did to control my diabetes it was still high and out of control. I start to have bad effects in my eyes and my feet. I also noticed that i had high blood pressure and was unable to exercise like i wanted too. So I have one more clearence appt. and have been trying to prepare myself for this life change I have had some set back in the prep.Due to part of my health has worsen cause of the diabetes i had stop exercising because my feet and back caused me pain. I still have questions that i have not got a clear answer for but hope that someone that has gone through this can give me their answer or their opinion. I will be schedule for surgery in May

How do I work out to get myself back to exercising before and continuing after surgery?

I have alot of food allergies and want to be able to finish more than three sips of the protien shake before i get the gaging reflex. How do i make it better tasting?

How do you make the puree meal taste better?

First of all you start excersing in baby steps.. Walk to the mailbox. the walk to the stop sign at the end of the road. go a little further you kinda get the point..lol I would try wheybolic isolate extreme 60 from GNC it has the best taste..I wouldget the choclate it is soo awesome . But as far as dressing them up you can use some sf Syrup choch or caramel.. Also there are unflavored Protein you can put in Soup or yougurt etc... As far as puree foods: When you are on solid liquids for as long as I was a puree vegtable Soup is awesome.. To me it taste like soup I enjoyed it sooo much. Good luck and please keep us posted..

Thanks for the advice I started to walk again last month and still can not walk far or long. At the first visit the doctor said that just walking is not exercising. So when should i start to add Protein to Soup or yogurt? Do know any of the brand name of these unflavored Protein?

I have loved the Bluebonnet brand of shakes. I got samples of strawberry, chocolate and vanilla and absolutely loved the vanilla. I put it in the blender with 8oz milk and some ice. My kids even love momma's new vanilla milk shakes and they ask me to make them for them. :-) I bought the bog container of the vanilla b/c I figure I can add other flavors w/ syrups, etc. Good luck finding one that you love.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
