34 bougie and acid reflux

Recommended Posts

hello all! I am just waiting from my insurance to approve my sleeve and wondering yalls opinions....

My surgeon uses a 34 bougie; I currently have GERD due to H.Pylori which I am being treated for (should be gone in about 2 weeks). I am wondering what the general consensus is on acid reflux with a size 34 stomach. My doc said the small the stomach the greater the likelihood of acid reflux so he thinks 34 is a good mid point...

Any thoughts?

I heard the smaller the bougie the more of a chance for reflux. My doctor uses a size 40 bougie and I have NO reflux at all. I had to take some prevacid a couple days after surgery but that's it. a can eat about a half cup of dense Protein and I am filled for hours. I got hunger pangs but at around 9 weeks post-op, they went away :)

With that being said, I heard there is a very very minor difference in the sizes (we are talking millimeters.....the thickness of a dime)

Good luck and do your research. you don't need GERD to get worse!

I would rather have a smaller stomach and take ppi's . I don't know what size bungie they used on me but i haven't had acid reflux at all. I have been taking protonics since about 2 months before surgery...so going to continue until doc takes me off..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
