Gas pains every time when eating or drinking

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I was sleeved 3/21 and I am now on the full liquid stage of the diet which for me includes Clear Liquids, Protein Shakes, greek yogurt, sugar free pudding etc. The problem is, every time I eat or drink anything (sometimes including water) I get these horrible gas pains in my stomach like I need to burp. It is literally right after I take one bite or one sip. I don't have much gas pain otherwise so i am wondering if this is a normal sensation in the beginning and will it last very long? I have heard of people talking about feeling full and needing to burp or getting pain when they get full but I don't think this is the same since it only takes one bite or one sip. Will this be the same feeling when I do get full later on??

I am also choosing not to take any of the Lortab they sent me home with for pain because I am intensely afraid of throwing up and Hydrocodone usually makes me do so. Other than what I mentioned above and the incision site soreness in the abdominal wall, I am not in any other pain. Oh onemore question, how did everyone do with coughing up thick phlegm out of their lungs post-op? The coughing hurts badly when it happens.

This will pass...I had so much gas. But the nurse told me that other's said, while the Lortab did nothing for pain, it stopped sooo helped with the gas. Also, my doc has me on Pepsid twice a day.

I am 14 days post op. I no longer get those gas pains that you are speaking of. I would say it stopped between post op days 7-9.

I am two weeks post-op and I get those EXACT pains after one bite or sip of anything. Doc told me it is normal and eventually it will go away. He said to take my gas x or the gas relief drops that are for babies. He said you can't overdose so to take as much as I needed. I just made a post about this yesterday because I needed some reassurance that it would eventually go away.

Congratulations on your surgery. I too, had my surgery on Monday. March 21st buti havent had the gas problem you mention, however I have experience the discomfort when i cough. All i do is hold a pillow to my tummy and cough as little as possible. Im on a liquid diet and can only take Water, sugar free popsicles, sugar free Jello or clear liquids which have been good but to be honest im not hungry for anything. I have tried the jello, popsicle and broth but i barly eat anything. I have maintained drinking all the water requirements and have been walking at least 10-15 minutes each hour. My question is how long will my incision soreness last? I have no other pain with the exception of that soreness. Anyways, I wish you the best of health and many better days to come......take care :)

Good question TexasLady - the large left incision is terribly sore but not near as bad as the stabbing gas pain. I think part ofmy problem is that I was taking too big of sips. I am now taking much smaller sips and it's not quite as bad but still a little painful.

Thank you everyone for letting me know that this is a normal sensation - I might try the Lortab later today.... we'll see.....

I had my surgery on 3/21 also, and I know what you are talking about. I have gas everytime I drink something. Im glad to hear this is normal. I feel full all the time and when I try to get in all my fluids, I feel like I will explode. Good Luck.

I was sleeve on 3/23 and this is exactly what's going on with me, each bite/drink I feel like I'm swallowing a gallon of air and then pain follows. I am using GasX and taking an acid reducer daily...I'm hoping this is just a passing phase because sharp pains for ANY reason is no fun. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
