I know exactly what your feeling and going through. I wanted mine done In Mexico from the get go. Number one they've done so many more than most doctors here in the states and the care seems to be second to none. But I kept thinking, I've never even been to Mexico let alone have a surgery there. I checked with my insurance company, Anthem, bc/bs and they didn't get in any hurry and then there was the well, you may have to go on a supervised diet for 6 months, you may have to do this that or the other and I thought, you know, my husband and I pay you guys 700.00 per month and I don't need this. So, I contacted Janet and Judy in Monterrey with Dr. Sanchez and I knew in my heart this is where I wanted it done. They had me scheduled from the time I called in one month. I have mine done in 2 weeks and couldn't be more excited. I checked with the Major University Hospitals here, Vanderbilt and Baptist and they had both done very few of these. Dr. Sanchez has done Thousands, that's what made up my mind. My insurance company would have paid but instead I prefer self pay with a peace of mind.

Good luck with your decisions and there are Doctors here who will do your after care and fills if you decide to have it done in Mexico.

I had mine done in the US. The biggest thing, if you choose to go to Mexico, is making sure you can find a fill doctor and follow up here in the states. It can be a problem if you would have to go all the way back to Mexico for follow ups and fills. I have heard both good and bad about the Mexico doctors. So I couldn't really say which is best.

Just reasearch your MX doc very well and make sure you have local after-care (fills, problems, if any, etc) when you get home.

I'm a happy Dr Kuri patient. Research well! You will find many happy MX bandsters, and others who wouldn't go back for all the money in the world. I have no regrets.

Well, I don't live in SD but am looking into it. I had my surgery done here in Hawaii, and I couldn't be happier about it. I have lost 75 lbs in 10 months, and my hubby has lost 102 lbs in one year. We are looking to see if there are any MD's in Sioux Falls or nearby that could do our follow up care, I think I am as filled as I am going to be, so not much care for me, but maybe for my hubby. Aloha

To both of the above writers:

I had my surgery done by Dr. Bradley Thaemert in Sioux Falls and he is totally awesome!! His website is

Surgical Institute of South Dakota

He has several other surgeons in the office as well. They are located at Avera McKennon Hospital. I had such a great experience (still am) and would recommend him to anyone. Just let me know if you need any more info - would be happy to help out!!

It has not been a good experience for me. I haven't had much success with weight loss, and I have had just about any and all negative effects that there is to be had. I have had 2 Barium Swallow Studies done, and the surgeon still doesn't know why I have had so much trouble with vomiting (not PBing....full out vomiting) that often happens several times a day. He told me if no changes within the next 2 months he will have to do a scope into my stomach to see if there is band erosion going on...since none of the other tests show anything. I regret my decision to have the surgery because it has been such a negative experience. BTW, I had mine done is Mitchell, SD....my doctor is great, but my all-around experience has been awful.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
