Hi,

I am still taking my Nexium MUPS from Mexico. I bought enough to get me through the first month and a half. I was wondering if anyone used an over-the-counter PPI like Prilosec OTC? Was it as effective? I am still unsure if my doctor will give me a prescription for Nexium going forward, so I am trying to investigate my options.

Thx!

Lara

hi,

When I came back from Mexico, the MUPS made me puke my guts out! had to switch to OTC fast, I started with the generic form of Prilosec, I think it is Omerazople or something like that. I used it for a few months, but was hungry all the time and my tiny tummy would gurgle and whine (literally make whining noises). I switched to the Prilosec and it is gone. The only time i have any gurgling and whining is when I eat very greasy or spicy foods! Last night it was homemade pickles! I had 2 slices and TT was singing all night, even with Maalox!!!

I was told to just make sure whatever I was taking equaled 20mg per day!

HTH,

Patti

I USED too but found it wasn't enough, the doc gave me a script for generic Omeprazole ( https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Omeprazole ) which is the same thing as Prilosec but the strength is twice as much and it finally cut the excess acid down for the entire day. I could of taken twice as much Prolosec but the Rx is cheaper with my insurance.

I also find that plain white low salt crackers help sop up the excess acid, a few a day won't wreck anyones diet. Beware of taking Calcium carbonate though, I was popping 6 Tums a day and wound up with kidney stones.

I use OTC Prilosec and I don't have any problems with it. It works as well for me as the Nexium did.

My doctor gave me a Omeprazole script which my insurance covers. I understand that taking a PPI is recommened for at least 6 months as the stomach produces the same amount of acid as it did for a regular stomach. Also the PPI helps the healing process.

I took the nexium mups, they didn't help, I tried several OTC products they didn't help. I tried 3 more prescription products they barely helped at all. I decide to stop taking all PPI, only use chewable Gaviscon when needed. And it seems I need it less and less. My acid issues were strictly around my 'false' hunger. I've never had burning issues in my tummy or throat. I think my hunger issues are starting to resolve on its own, maybe with healing. (I'm 7 months out)

Anyways, all that said, I have 4 un-opened boxes of nexium mups, if anyone is interested, send me a PM. I would only want what I paid for them and $5 for postage.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
