Well, I slept good last night, and got up early. Went to the hospital to get ready for the surgery. Vitals are done, a lab was drawn for just in case I needed a transfusion. They gave me a blood thinner. Then the doctor comes to see me and notices that my weight went up a couple pounds since my last appt. Then he asks me if I had any carbs this week. I can't lie (except to myself) and admitted I had a little bit. Surgery is cancelled. He explained how all carbs get stored in the liver and swells it up, even if it's only a little bit. I protested as much as I could. He talked to me for a bit and I know he's right. I just had been making excuses for myself. So I put my clothes back on and my coat, and did a walk of shame out of the Surgery Department. I know he is right. I know I screwed up. I am so angry at myself. I have to call his surgery coordinator today to figure it all out. He told me to come back to his office in 2 weeks to weigh in. After that I don't know how it will work. I tried not to cry at the hospital, and now I'm home. I just feel numb.

Ohh Heather, I am soooo sorry. Baby girl... when I was reading your post I almost started crying myself. Hugs.

Hopefully in a couple more weeks you will have a new surgery date.

Oh my I am so sorry to hear you had to go thru that. Keep your head up it will all fall into place. I myself am wondering why my doc never told me no carbs is this true for all doctors? My doc put me on a 1200 calorie diet which I started yesterday for 12 days and then day 13 & 14 I'm suppose to do a liquid diet. Hmmm, I better look into this. Anyhow best of luck to you hope everything works out....

Yeah, I hear that some people do a 2 week liquid diet to shrink the liver. And he says some doctors don't ask it of their patients. But he said it makes the surgery alot easier for him and cuts the risks down by alot. So now I'm learning the hard way. :/

I'm really sorry that you had to endure that. Not every surgeon is as stringent with carb intake. I had to do a week of low carb/high Protein diet prior to surgery and my liver looked fabulous even with a BMI close to 50.

Every Doctor pre op diets/guidelines are different, but the majority of them are low carb. The reason is as the OP mentioned above, it will shrink the liver to help with easier access to your stomach. A fatty liver is really hard to maneuver and get around. I believe I have mentioned this here many times, the pre op diet must be followed - or running the risk of having your surgery cancelled. It has everything to do with a safe surgery, and losing weight is but a side effect.

I hope this time you can stick to your pre op diet, I'm very sad for you.

I know anyone can, it's only a few weeks. If someone wants the surgery bad enough, it's best to bite the bullet and do what our surgeons tell us. They only have our best interests in mind...

More than anything, I just want people to learn from my mistakes. I didn't set out to dupe the doctor and get sleeved and then live the way I feel like. Mostly, I didn't recognize until now how important it was that the liver shrink a nd how just a little bit really affects it. I'm one of those people who rationalizes all of my bad behaviour to keep it making sense (didn't work out because I have to work, didn't eat properly because I have a headache or I did lots of exercise just before). I always knew I was my own worst enemy. I am working up the nerve to call the surgery coordinator's office now. I gotta fix my mess.

Heather you deserve a big THANK YOU from me. I started my liquid diet today. I just got a call from my surgeon's office and my surgery is 3/29 ... next Tuesday!

I am sorry you had to go through the cancellation but I for one will heed your warning.

Best of luck on the reschedule.

Ok, I just talked to the coordinator. I'm going to go back and weigh in on monday april 4th, and then see her. From there they will reschedule if I lost the weight. I was really upset earlier but I tried not to cry. Now I am still bummed, but I see an opportunity for myself to get where I need to be mentally and physically and lose some weight without the surgery. I know I can do this and I'm feeling better. Thanks for all your input everybody, you are all so experienced here and I just needed to vent to my support peeps. I will let you know how things are going. :)

Hold your head up Heather. We all make mistakes. It's admitting to, and taking ownership of, the mistakes we make that really makes the difference, and you have done that. Stop beating yourself up and pick up the phone and call. You are now on your way to doing things the right way.

Oh Heather , I am heartsick for you! I know how much I long for my surgery and to think you got so close and were sent home really hurts. <<<HUGS!>>>

BTW, be mindful you have had a blood thinner- if you cut yourself you will need to be extra careful about stopping the bleeding. Don';t shave ;-P

Don't beat yourself up. I am going to say what no other person said...your surgeon in a CREEP!!! There is not hard fact evidence of the liver shrinking...NONE..Just a belief. My doctor doesn't even require a pre-op diet for this reason and he is a very cautious doctor. just no large meals 3 days before surgery.

I am sorry you had to go through this horrific experience. I can imagine the planning and mental preparation you had to go through. Don't beat yourself up, folloow the plans and get your surgery. I am speechless at your story.

Wow, news to me... do you have anything to back that up? Just curious. I've seen many WLS television shows and they've showed the difference between having the surgery with a fatty liver and a healthy one. From what I've seen it's clearly easier to work around a non fatty liver.

So sorry to hear about this! Just think though, it's that much more time you have to lose pounds that will never return! Be positive, you can do it!smile.gif

Awwww that sucks. Although when it's all said and done, I'd rather have a surgeon who is more cautious than not....if you were on the table and he found an enlarged liver, you may have ended up with mighty big scar!

Very kind of you to share so we can learn from you. I haven't had surgery yet but your story will be ringing in my ears if I'm tempted to cheat on the pre-op!

Hope April 4 comes quickly for you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
