I chew gum first thing in the morning after working all night. It helps to freshen my breath and keeps my mind off food while I am cooking for the ladies I provide services to.

My doctor recommends no gum and no hard candies (same reasons as for gum) - risks of getting stuck, excess air swallowed.

Oh Please! No gum? How much more can I give up!!!

Seriously, I have always been a gum chewer- it kept me from needing as many cigarettes during the day and saved the day when i quit smoking ( 3 weeks shy of 1 year!) It does take the place of grazing during the day. My dr never said anything about it and I do not swallow it. There is always a pack of trident on my desk and another in the drawer. Am I replacing one vice for another? yah, probably- wanna make somethng about it!!!???

Hi,

There is a woman at our local support group who was a huge gum chewer and, low and behold, she accidentally swallowed a peice after being banded. She suffered for two days before going to the doctor because she was so embarassed. Her doctor unfilled her and the gum went right through.

She strongly advised gum chewing now!

Funny, the morning after surgery, I went to the store to buy foods that I could eat. I was chewing gum and got tired of it. I had no where to throw it out and out of habit, just swallowed it. I immediately panicked and imagined having to have "surgery to remove it". After calling my doctor, he said I probably would be okay (I was) but to call if I had any problems. His nurse laughed at the situation. I guess it could have been a real problem, but it turned out okay. I'm very careful now when I chew gum.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
