Slightly nervous about surgery in the morning

Recommended Posts

Tomorrow morning is THE DAY! I will finally be sleeved! I will be at the hospital at 6:30 AM for pre-op. I'm getting kinda nervous, which is weird because I haven't been at all until today. I'm just scared that something won't go right :( and I was wondering, what did everyone bring to the hospital with them?

I am probably only going to be staying overnight so I'm not sure how much to bring with me.

You don't need a lot for an overnight stay but the things I took and was glad to have were chapstick (used it a lot!), my slippers (hospital no-skid socks don't stay on well and I walked a lot), and hand lotion.

P.s. I was nervous too the day before. Got to hospital at 6 AM and it went really fast. The night before just waiting was the worst.

You will do great! I agree with bringing the chapstick. Put some on before you go in for surgery and it will help keep your lips from getting so chapped. Also, make sure you have a pillow for the ride home. Good luck! We will be cheering for you! ;)

Sara Ann, congratulations.

You are taking an important step. I brought pajamas, but only wore the pants and slippers in the hospital. Dont forget lip balm...your mouth will be dry. If you are released after one day, you probably wont feel like doing your make-up and hair, make it easy and bring lose fitting clothes to wear home. Best of luck on your new adventure!

I have my surgery tomorrow too! I have to stay 2 nights since my surgeon is a self-professed paranoid doctor. So I am bringing loose stretch pants so my butt doesn't hang out of the hospital gown. I am bringing my kindle and my phone. I will have my chapstick and toothbrush and face lotion since I hate the feeling of not having lotion on my face. deoderant. lotion. underwear. I'm only wearing the clothes on the way to the hospital for a little while, so I will keep them to wear home. I am gonna wear my croc ballet shoes in lieu of sneakers or slippers..

I also was only suppose to stay overnight, but ended up staying 3 nights! Be prepared, even if you think it will only be overnight. Sometimes complications happen and you just need a little extra time. Be patient and know that you are taking a big step towards a new and exciting life!

Things that I took were: Chapstick, hairbrush and hair tie (I have long hair), slippers, my own socks, a reading book, and loose comfortable clothes for going home. I live over 120 miles from where I had my surgery so I had to stay an extra night in a motel just to be sure. I slept the entire time. BUT a pillow for the ride home was well worth it!

I made sure I got up within 3 hours of being in my room. Then I got up every hour on the hour and walked a loop or two around the hospital wing where I was at. Then I would go back to bed, sip my Water and Protein and rest for about 20 minutes. Only to get back up and do it all over again each hour. I had a hard time sleeping in the hospital so instead of just tossing and turning, I would get up and walk my laps.

My complications came from Xray giving me too much of the contrast and barium. My dr checks for immediate leaks by xray before releasing you. The stuff they made me drink made me very very sick even though I kept telling them I can't take that much in. Never go to any test without someone with you. I learned this the hard way and I am still recovery from it! AND don't be afraid to second guess anything they want or ask you to do. I was too much in the anesthesia fog to plead too much. I should have had my husband with me. He wouldn't have let them do that to me!

Good luck and you will do great! Once I made it to pre-op room, my nerves were done. I was ready to just get it over with!

My surgery was Monday and I was an overnight. I took only the clothes on my back and my purse, with MP3 player and chapstick and brush. I used the chapstick once and pretty much slept the rest of the time since I couldn't sleep the night before. Also, my pain pump wasn't working for about the first hour and I was hardly screaming, lol. I just felt very uncomfortable - but we all experience pain differently.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
