I am 3 /12 weeks post surgery, and started on soft foods this week. So far so good until yesterday evening. I had been taking it pretty easy with food this week - yogurt, cottage cheese with applesauce, chicken salad minced really fine, mashed black Beans with mild salsa, and pureed Soups. Yesterday at lunch I steamed myself 3 oz of asparagus until soft and cut it into small pieces before I ate it. No problem there. Last night I browned some lean ground beef with diced mushrooms and onions in broth, and mixed in a few warm mashed potatoes at the end to make an applesauce like consistency. Tasted fine going down - but I either ate too much or something in the concoction didn't agree with me. I had bad stomach pain the rest of the night. I did sleep about three hours, but was up again at 1 am with the bad stomach pain for another three hours. My temperature and BP are fine - so I don't think I have a leak. I am fine today, am am going back on liquids for today to make sure I give my sleeve time to recover. Have other people had this kind of pain from eating something innocuous? Anything on my list of what I have been eating I should stay away from?

i don't think you are suppose to eat beef or pork for a while - atleast thats what i was told by my dr.

you may want to ask but beef takes a lot more to digest then chicken or fish.

i still have a hard time with chicken - i am good with fish - just chicken is a problem.

good luck.

Asparagus is considered too stringy and fibrous and I've heard we're supposed to stay away from that for a while, too.

Onions are on my caution list from the dr. I was told onions, cabbage, and a few other vegetables cause gas. I was told to avoid them while the staple line is healing.

Thanks for the good hints - I will stay away from beef, onions and asparagus for a while. SInce I had all three yesterday, no wonder my stomach hurt!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
