NEW PCP wants to try Adipex

Recommended Posts

SOOO a while back I posted about my PCP being unsupportive. I have since found a new doctor and when making my appointment I asked the nurse about the PCP being supportive of WLS. She says that the office has patients that have had it.

I met the new doc and LOVED her - however she wants me try a month on Adipex. My sister-in-law did Adipex and lost like 50 pounds - and now she gained it all back and then some. I know that I will too when I stop taking it. My VSG is scheduled for June 20th and I don't need a letter from my PCP - she just has to sign off on my surgery. SO I guess I'm just venting and asking your opinions. This forum has been great for info, reassurance and support.

Well... My opinion is why not take the Adipex? What's the worst that will happen? You will lose weight!! Plus, your VSG isn't scheduled until June so you really have the time to spare, right? From what you have said so far, I'd do the month of Adipex if it isn't going to change the surgery date... If it does postpone the surgery and you aren't willing to do that, then ask your surgeon for a PCP recommendation (if he knows of anyone that will sign off) and then continue going to the new PCP that you love for any other issues! :)

Well, what'll happen with the Adipex is that you'll lose weight, all right -- you'll also have hot flashes, get unbearably, painfully constipated, become a simmering pot of fury for no apparent reason, and then when you go off of it, you'll gain back everything you lost - quicky - and then some.

Seriously though, that was my experience, totally not exaggerating.

Yeah, I have taken adipex in the past (8 years ago) and I lost about 90 lbs in a 12 month period. I gained it all back and then some after about 2 years. I "tried" it again last year and I couldn't tolerate it anymore. Gave me terrible headaches and made me extremely jittery. Sooo, I say try it and it will get you on the right track, but I definitely wouldn't consider it a long term solution.

I did the same thing: working toward insurance-paid VSG with a supervised diet program on Phentermine, lost 90 lbs, gained 65 back. I should have continued with my surgery goal and done it then but thought, "THIS time I'll keep it off..." My decision to go to Mexico & self-pay was the best decision for me ~ done with jumping thru insurance hoops!

I think it is time for you to sit down and make a clear and concise list of the reasons you want to have VSG and the reasons why you know other methods such as medicine will not help you.

Mike it plain and clear so the doctor can look at it quickly. Then after she has read it look in her eyes and tell her there are just some components to weight loss that science has not figured out and that while you appreciate her abilities as a doctor there are just somethings in medicine that she has to rely on patient for and those are the deep down reasons and feelings you have about your weight and and weight loss and that you appreciate her helping you to achieve success in a way you know will work for you.

I agree with Stacy, and in addition to all the symptoms she mentioned, Adipex can also raise your blood pressure. Not sure if High BP is a problem for you, but when I took Adipex years ago, my BP was normal and it raised it while I was taking it. So that might be a consideration you want to look at. I know she said only a month, but why risk it? You could lose just as much by going low carb for a month, if not more.

That's why I love this blog! Thanks everyone for your comments. I will get the script filled and I will give it a try...but I am in NO WAY doing this INSTEAD of my VSG. Myrori - I will write that list. I have my little "VSG Binder" that I have kept copies of everything and all the info I had to give the Bariatric Institute to be approved by them. So I'll add my list to my folder.

My psych eval is Monday...I'm kind of excited....does that make me weird??? WIth the Psychologist think I'm weird??? Just kidding. But I am excited to have my eval done. One step closer.

KinkySlinkyRN thanks for sharing your experience. Good to know before I try it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
