Dr.Kuri's Pre-op diet

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Okay so tomorrow I start the 2 week pre op diet. It's supposed to consist of High Protein and keeping carbs under 40g/day. They also prefer that you do as much as you can in liquid form so I am going to be doing Protein shakes and bars mostly.

I live in Canada, Alberta to be exact and went out and about to find Protein Bars today. While there are tons of choices at Walmart, most of them seemed to have like 23 to 26g of carbs. It didn't break down the net carbs and such so I have no idea which ones to get. I ended up getting a couple Atkins because even though it listed 19g on the fron it said only count 2g. I was going to try the Pria bars because tons of people said that they were quite good but again it showed tons of carbs and I don't know where the breakdown to net carbs can be found. Am I just a dunce or what?

If anyone (Canucks especially since the US seems to have a lot more variety than us) can suggest some good bars to try I would greatly appreciate it as well as any suggestions from Kuri patients who had to do the pre op.

I'm totally stressing about this pre op diet. I've been queasy all day, though that might just be nerves.....anyways thanks all.

Time2live,

Hey there. I am a Kuri girl too. We do have an obscene number of choices down here, but if you have the Pria bars, do you have Pria select? The caramel Peanut Butter are SO tasty and softer than the chemical cardboard tasting shmoo.

You only have to count net carbs or impact carbs. Sugar alcohols and Fiber don't count toward the 40/day.

Slimfast also has a high Protein with 1 or 2 net carbs. This is usually labeled in a prominent area on the front of the package.

I got so sick of sweet, we are discussing the 'headache from hell' on another thread, but it goes away by day three.

Congratulations so much on your upcoming surgery!!

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions... It is all still pretty fresh in my memory and I took good notes.

Hiya Time2Live...sorry I can't help you. I never did (& don't do) Protein bars....I'd rather get it in through other means. When you count the carbs listed...all you do is subtract the # of fibre that is also listed...(usually it isn't very much fibre anyways!).

Good luck...and don't worry if you can't find any you like....the preop diet can still be done without bars.

Sending good wishes your way for the upcoming day!

Thanks for telling me how to figure out the net carbs. I'm probably not going to use the bars a ton anyways but I'd like to have something in case a craving kicks in. I talked to my patient facilitator and she said that as long as you are staying under the daily carb count, that is what is important....and not so much the entirely liquid part though it doesn't specify how much Protein I should be eating in a day...I was assuming about 70 to 80g.

Anyways I'm off to make a shake. Day one and feelin good!...lol

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
