Am I lucky told I didn't need a PRE-OPT diets

Recommended Posts

I am wondering am I one of the lucky ones that doesn't have to do a 2 week pre op diet?

I was told just don't go to buffets before! LOL

I thought about doing my own modified one anyway to make things even more easier on myself?

Thoughts comments?

I would start now.. I lost 32lbs on the pre op diet..

that was 32 less I had to loose after the surgery...

also helps you get into the frame of mind of eating good/balanced food

I didn't have to do any type of pre-op diet either. Looking back, I wish I had, I'm guessing I would be that much further along. Oh well. Can't change it now...lol. Oh, and DH was just sleeved Mar. 1st and (of course same surgeon as me) and he didn't do a pre-op either.

So if you are up to it, then I say go ahead and try and drop some lbs before surgery. It's good advice!

Well you will be on a liquid diet after, You should start the liquids because it will help yoI am so glau so much after surgery. Getting a reduced calroic intake will help you when you are struggling with not getting a what you are getting right now.. I'm so glad that I did the liquids.

If you do it, even for a week, it will make the liver less fatty and big, and make surgery easier for you and the surgeon. Less risk for a nick on the liver. Just a thought.

And yeah, it will get you ready for the brutal POST-op diet. I did a 7 day low carb diet pre-op and still wasn't prepared for this. Geez.wink.gif

You can try very low carbs, high Protein to put the body in ketoisis. I was able to eat all the protein, fresh veggies, and sugar free drinks until about 3 days before. Then mainly liquids with 1 protein.

i have been doing the pre-op diet since october. so, 5 months. i enjoy it, i feel a lot better and have lost 50 lbs! my dr. wanted me to lose 25 lbs, so i have exceeded his expectations!

i feel that it does set you up for the way you will have to eat post-op. i plan to have my surgery sometime next month.

What Disney said above. While it is certainly true that some do NO pre-op diet I am of the firm opinion that it can do you no harm and only good will come of it. It will get the food out of your gut so post-op Constipation and difficult or painful movements will be less likely. It will also get your head ready and you will really know you are serious about this lifestyle change.

Because of the program I'm going through, it scares me that people don't have a pre-op diet to follow. I can't imagine not practicing the changes you need to make for after surgery. I think it just makes it so much easier if you're already practicing what you'll be doing after surgery, so you're more prepared. But as I'm seeing, there are so many different programs. And as others have said, following a pre-op diet decreases any fat in the liver. And you don't want a fatty liver for surgery because it could crack and bleed and that would be all bad. I don't want to scare anyone, I just think the program I'm going through really emphasizes things to make us take it extra seriously. If that makes sense.

Hey G,

I am doing the 24 hour Clear liquids only. Too close to BMI for me.... But if you have quite a bit to lose, starting now would only benefit you. I do see more and more people starting the low carb diets before their surgery. Maybe you want to cut fat or carbs to help shrink your liver a bit, just to make surgery easier.

Good Luck

The more you loose before the further down the road you will be. Also my Dr. said it helped to reduce your liver size

so it was easier to get to your stomach and reduce the risk of a nick to the liver during surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
