Calories and Metabolism question

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know the amount of calories recommended to have steady weight loss? My loss is so slow. And I will go days and days with no loss or even fluctuating up and down a pound or 2. I am almost 3 months out from surgery, I get on average 500 calories a day, but sometimes up to 900. I do exercise, though not every day. My husband says I'm the only person he knows who can apparently MAINTAIN my body weight on 500 calories a day! LOL

Also metabolism...I think mine sux. How do I make that better?

Thanks for any advice!

Put metabolim in search, there's great advice here. Mine surely has to be messed up too ~ I lost 90 on my own, put 20 slowly back on, & then bam--another 45 in 3 months. I was out-of-control and that is when I knew I needed it done asap. 38 lbs: You're doing great at around 3 months! I've been on a stall until a few days ago due to my own laziness and the don't-want-to stuff. Plus having ice cream on hand = what was I thinking?!!

Journaling my food & exercise seems to be the key to keeping me on track. As they talk about on here, try shaking up your calories & exercise, make sure you're getting enough Protein, or maybe your body is just catching up...we have a great lifetime tool. Lu

I am 58 and truly believe that age is a big factor in metabolism. I'm losing very slowly too. Very rarely do I look forward to eating. I almost look at eating like taking my vitamins....just something I need to do to try and be healthy.

I am having these same issues myself and was having the same conversation with myself this morning. Yesterday I tracked 725 for my calorie intake and 300 for calories burned. Same weight this morning as yesterday morning. How is this possible?? I had an easy surgery, easy recovery and I thought the pounds would just fall off. I am drinking my 64 ounces/day and getting between 50-70g of Protein. I have been keeping my carbs at 40 or below. How in the world am I not loosing more than 2lbs max/week? Any advice??

I think we are probably all metabolically challenged - that's why we got the surgery to start with, isn't it?

My husband keeps reminding me of that fact when I am getting all pissy about not losing. He said "You got the surgery because you were the world's slowest loser, you changed your stomach, not your metabolism"

The big advantage I believe is that this helps us stick with a leaner life style even if weight is not coming of as hoped for.

And on the other hand, some of your calories just seem way too low. 725 and burned off 300 calories? Assuming that your burned calories are accurate - your body is shutting down, try to up the calories a little. Actually giving your body a little more food can help coax your metabolism out of the black hole again

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
