Day After Surgery - Would Love Some Input

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery yesterday morning at Woman's Hospital in Baton Rouge by Dr. Drake Bellanger. When I came to, I had A LOT of pain in my left abdominal area. So much so that they had to get permission to give me something else for the pain. They fixed a hernia and the nurse said that this probably contributed to the excess pain. My blood pressure spiked in recovery but finally calmed down.

Anyway, I was able to get right on ice chips and broth which was really nice and I tolerated it very well. I have been very fortunate that I only had very slight nausea right after getting to my room but no vomitting!! Yay!!

The night was basically uneventful except needing help to get the stupid IV to the bathroom!! And, I was released this afternoon. The pain meds have helped my pain on the left.

So, I have quesitons about gas and "hunger" pains. Does the gas go away??? I've been belching all day with some...ummm...tooting. I definitely feel very gassy in my belly which is more annoying than anything. And, I almost feel hungry. Not super hungry....kind of gnawing hunger. Is this normal? Is this the gas?

And, I started on the Protein bullets as prescribed by the nutrionist and HATE THEM! I can tolerate them by mixing them in with my Water. I can take a sip at least every 10 to 15 minutes. So, is this okay to meet both my Water and Protein requirements??

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Hi, the gas ugly feeling stayed with me for about a week! The worst gas pain days were the 3rd day for some reason, I had to call my doctor and he told me to try prune juice. don't do it without your doctor's permission, everyone is different. It did help alot!!! The day after wasn't as gassy painful. Those hunger pains... i get them, but I don't think they are really hunger pains, supposedly we have the hunger hormone taken out. Maybe it's gas or acid reflux? oh and with time you will be able to meet your water and protein, it took me a week and a half. Sounds like you are doing good :)

hi I got sleeved on 3-14-11 I too had bad gas pressure all through my shoulder, and my chest felf like I had alot of gas built up right after surgery , it eventually went away on the second day, when they took my draining tube out I felt a big relief from my shoulder , almost like pulling out a gas bubble that was stuck:)

I had hunger the first few weeks and folks kept telling me it was in my head but I knew it wasn't. Good news it won't last long. The first few weeks are the hardest. I was told to drink 1 oz evey 20 min but I did not do Proteins until 1 week later. Welcome to the loser bench.

You might want to try some Isopure Protein Drinks. I don't think they are as nasty as the bullets. You would have to ask a nutritionist or dr. about whether it would meet your Water requirements that way.

It does get easier!

I'm 2 days post op, the gas pains are horrible, lots of walking, Dr. Said he made me super snug, (not sure what he meant) can start full liquids today, very tired, pain is tolerable, spasms suck tho. Just this morning can burp, and toot a little. Doesn't seem to help much, 2 tiny sips and feel bloated full, I hear it gets easier, sure hope so

I was burping and tooting like I was making my own demented band!! It was super embarrassing, but at least it was only my mom hearing it : )

besides it made me feel so much better!!! I'm 3 weeks out and you will feel so much better in just a couple days. I went shopping for a few hours on my 3rd or 4th day. The walking helped soooo much. Walk as much as humanly possible. I walked the halls even when I got up to use the bathroom during the night. I figured, " hey, I'm up and getting out of bed is the worst part... Might as well walk a lap" may only take a couple min., but every bit helps. If you have spasms when you drink, try warm liquids. I couldn't do cold stuff. It hurt and spasmed. Let us know how your doin,

Heather ( fern )

I had the dreaded gas pains the first few days but found that the more I walked the better it felt. It definitely gets easier. I was sleeved on 3/7 and everyday it gets better. I feel like I'm hungry too sometimes but I don't think I am. I think its more head hunger when I smell foods. Just walk and drink Water. You'll feel a little better everyday!

Walk as much as possible to get rid of the gas pains, in the hospital I did several laps at a time a few times a day and the same when I got home. I think they helped clear me out of all that gas.

As for the hunger it probably is acid, are you taking a PPI like prilosec or nexium? Many on here were prescribed them, I myself was just given pepcid but I guess it was somewhat for the same thing.

It will get better with or without walking and the medication but may get better quicker with both in place.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
