Protein shakes are making me nauseous

Recommended Posts

I am on week 2 of my liquid pre-op diet and the Protein shakes are starting to make me feel really nauseous and I have to struggle to get them down. Has anyone else had this problem? and what can I do? I know I need them, but I just dread drinking them lately.

Oh and by the way, I'm drinking Matrix 5.0 shakes made with the Protein powder

I am almost a month out and Protein Drinks STILL make me ill. I did not do well during my liquid phase with Protein drinks. You'll get through it though. I focused on skim milk during my liquid phase and low carb smoothies from smoothie King. Now I try to eat all my protein. To get to my daily requirement I am eating about 2 Low-fat string cheeses a day and drinking about 16 ouces of milk. Cuple that with my Breakfast (egg) lunch (tuna) and dinner. I think I am getting all my protein in. Do a search on "protein drinks" and you will see you are not the only one.

Go on this website www.theworldaccordingtoeggface.com The girl who runs the site had gastric bypass many years ago and literally logs and takes pictures of all her food. She also has a Facebook page as well. I heard people saying the Max Protein she gets from GNC is the best. Good Luck...although it seems like it...it DOESN"t last forever.

I use Atkins Advantage and love them. I have 2 more days of all liquids......including my pre-op (which was 3 shakes and a smart one) it will be a total of 3 weeks and 2 days on liquids. I am SOOOOO done with it but I just started feeling this way. I can not wait til Friday AM and I can add in my mushies. Hang in there even tho it's tough, the end result is all worth it......PROMISE!

I've used Atkins and they are pretty good.

Now I'm using Unjury and the CVS brand powders and they are great.

Have you tried getting different samples?

I used the unflavoured kind. Yes you can still taste it unfortunately. BUT.... I throw milk in the blender, with a few strawberries, protien powder, a couple ice cubes, and whip it up so no chunks. I also sometimes add a bit of spenda if the strawberries aren't really sweet. Tastes like strawberry milk!! And the sweet strawberry taste masks the after taste that I can't stand. I also use baking flavourings and extracts instead of strawberries sometimes. Works great!! Good luck!!

I had to do nothing but Protein Shakes for 2 weeks prior to surgery, and I didn't have a problem with them. Then I had to do it for one week post-op and by day 4 I would almost be dry-heaving when I would bring it up to my mouth. Three weeks later I still can't do Protein shakes. Do your best to get the protein in and just remember that you only have to tough the shakes out for a little longer. The day I was allowed pureed food was pure heaven!

Try some different products. I got samples from Unjury, Chicke, Netrition and Vita Lady and there is a huge difference between products and flavors. I love, love, love the Unjury chocolate Splendor and chicken Soup but the strawberry from Chicke made me want to throw up. I haven't been sleeved yet so I am trying to identify what I can tolerate first. Maybe mixing it up a bit will help. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
