Aretha Franklin

Recommended Posts

My first thought, upon hearing her interview, was she may not have had bypass, but she definitely had bariatric surgery. I just don't get why she feels the need to stay in the closet about it. It will be nice for all when these interventions are taken for the wonderful medical advance they are and the stigma is removed. I'm the type who tells everyone and can care less what the naysayers have to say. Once I arm myself with the facts and make up my mind to do something it's a done deal. So, it's hard for me to understand the people who want to hide it. I respect their wishes, just don't understand it.

On a side note, there was speculation that Jennifer Hudson went that route too. Jen's story was a little more believable to me than Aretha's. Although, others are not as convinced.... http://www.bittenandbound.com/2010/04/01/jennifer-hudson-weight-loss-before-and-after-photos-video/

I actually believe Jennifer Hudson did it on WW -- I think you can lose 80 pounds in a year (I've done it several times on WW). The point is, is that you always end up gaining it back because you get to a place where you think you are "done." And in reality, you're never "done." The sleeve gives us the ability to keep the "done" mentality in check.

But Aretha losing 50 pounds since December? Nahhh, that's weight loss surgery.

Either that or Medi-Fast. You can lose that fast on a complete liquid diet too... though she never claimed that either. No one can lose on salads alone, that's just all Water...

Aretha Franklin, The Queen of Soul has been in the news lately for her rapid weight lost (85 lbs. in a few months). Most folks believed she undergone some type of bariatric surgery. Yet she denies it, see article at http://news.softpedia.com/news/Aretha-Franklin-Denies-Getting-Gastric-Bypass-Surgery-189232.shtml.

I’ve been a fan of the Soul Singer since I was a teen. And it’s my opinion that what she does with her life is her business and hers alone.

Please weight in.

Wow this seems to be a real hot button issue... I've had to just now merge 3 threads.

Mmmmm...yeah, but no. When you are a celebrity it's the people's interest in your life that keeps you a celebrity. When no one cares anymore they just become, well...me, lol. Seriously though, she wants the attention and it was such a drastic and sudden change, she's getting the attention. I just don't understand why all the subterfuge and misdirection. I mean, pancreatic cancer came from somewhere...all the major news channels reported on it. I think this would be much less of a hot button topic if SHE hadn't created it. Perhaps she's using it to put herself firmly back in the public eye.

Agreed. You can also lose that fast on Atkins. I lost 45 pounds in 2 months on Atkins so I know she could lose 50 in 3 months. It comes off a lot faster when you are as large as she is (was), too. And I was only 195 when I did it.

I don't get the secrecy about it either. Star Jones denied having bypass forEVER, and finally broke down and admitted it like a year later. I just don't get it.huh.gif

She did say she had surgery that the doctor said would take years off of her life. She did not say what surgery. SInce she denied the bypass that leaves two!

I would love the stigma to be removed. She could do so much for others if she would be upfront about it.

I don't feel that Aretha has to explain or justify, but she is well-loved, therefore people are interested. Especially when the first reports were that she had pancreatic cancer. And yes admittedly I am interested due to my interest in the sleeve. I do believe it was the sleeve or lapband if she had one, cuz she denies the GB. I believe due to a family member passing away from that surgery, she prob would not have had that one.

She is also promoting a new cd, so it's not just the wls rumors that she is in the media. Celebrities have to do a little trade off. The talk show hosts get to pry a little bit while giving Stars free advertising for music, movies, books, etc. She is also working on a movie biopic about her life. I wish the Queen of Soul much sucess on her weight issues, health, and career.

Totally agree!

And I believe Jennifer Hudson lost it the "old" fashioned way, wether by liquid diet or WW or whatever. I'm pretty sure that there could be a lawsuit if she had gastric surgery and then went on to tell everyone it was WW. Can you imagine?

Ditto!! I believe Jhud...also it would be extremely unscrupulous and maybe illegal to endorse WW if that wasn't her primary source of weight loss.

As far as Aretha, being an AA woman, I can kinda understand, because our ppl can be so negative and judgemental. But she is a celeb. I think ppl would understand her doing it. Esp because she was so overweight. Whatever it is, kudos to her. She looks way better and is 100 times healthier i am sure.

Another potential suspect is Raven symone

Okay, my 8 year old daughter just walked by while I was reading this post and said "who IS that?" I was like it's Raven Symone" and she says "WOW, SHE HAS LOST A LOT OF WEIGHT!!!"

I did not realize that she was so skinny...I haven't seen her in a movie in a while and her show is off the Disney Channel, so I haven't kept up. HOLY COW she IS skinny. I wonder what she did...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
