Cmsumom 5 Posted March 14, 2011 I tried looking- but couldn't find anything - Has anyone had their gallbladder taken out and the sleeve done at the same time? Mine they think is acting up and I am getting ready to have the sleeve surgery but - don't want two surgeries- I just want to get it over with in one big scoop- ---
mina 27 Posted March 14, 2011 yes they can remove it at the same time. 25% of people will need gallbladder surgery after bariatric surgery so some surgeons routinely remove the gallbladder during bariatric surgery and some don't. if you already having problems then it's a good idea to have it remove at the same time. the recovery time is longer though. Cmsumom 5 Posted March 14, 2011 yeah- that is what I am worried about- the recovery time and if they can even do it- I am the main cargiver for my two kids and my parents- and I only have two weeks I can take off- yes they can remove it at the same time. 25% of people will need gallbladder surgery after bariatric surgery so some surgeons routinely remove the gallbladder during bariatric surgery and some don't. if you already having problems then it's a good idea to have it remove at the same time. the recovery time is longer though. Beadingnurse 116 Posted March 15, 2011 When I was doing my research for this surgery I found that some docs routinely remove the gallbladder during the surgery anyway but my surgeon won't take it out unless there is an indication for removal (like gallstones). I don't think it will add to your recovery time. If you had laparoscopic removal of just your gallbladder, you'd likely be in the hospital for same day surgery or in for just one night. Recovery time is generally 1 -2 weeks which is the same for the sleeve. Sounds like this is a good time to get it done but again, check with your surgeon! singand_dance 8 Posted March 16, 2011 My program said they DO NOT do both at the same time and I'd have to do the gallbaldder first, then 6 weeks later I could have the sleeve. BUT when I talked with my actual surgeon, he said it would be no problem to do both at the same time and he'd like to do a single incision through the belly-button. Plumpy 1 Posted March 16, 2011 I had gallbladder and sleeve done on March 1st - and the surgeon was quite happy to do both at the same time. Who wants 2 anaesthetics a few weeks apart!!! My recovery wasn't text-book perfect as I had an internal bleed from the gallbladder site and ended up being transfused etc, so I'm pretty tired and washed out. The bleed wasn't totally unexpected as there is a whole family history of clotting deficiencies etc, so really had nothing to do with whether both ops were done at the same time or not.Just one of those things. I'd definitely be opting for the 2 in 1 op if I were in your shoes
