Hello,

Yes I did stop drinking diet dr. pepper and my starbucks expresso it took me six months but before my surgery I had stopped. I started increasing my Water intake due to drinking so much Water I could not fit in my daily soda and I changed my coffee to Decaf. tea. I'm glad I did it because I had the worst headaches but then my body finally accepted the changes. Now 4 months post op I don't really miss my daily diet dr. pepper or my starbucks. But again this was over a six month time frame maybe having a diet dr. pepper on Saturday and Sunday then just Saturday to non at all.

Hope this helps

I am literally addicted to Diet Dr. Pepper. Has anyone weaned themselves off, any sugestions?

My doctor said no soda or alcohol for one year post sleeve.

I have Federal BCBS too... Have you been approved yet? Have you completed your 3 month "supervised diet"?

When I talked to them on the phone I don't have to do a 3 month supervised diet -- I had to have a bunch of forms filled out prior to my consult. They are only requiring a pysch eval, regular doc eval and 2 years showing my weight.

You are the first Federal BCBS that had to have a 3 month supervised diet I have seen.

I have my consult Thursday. I am group code 104 is that helps.

Just to get myself going ahead of time I gave up caffeine about 2.5 weeks ago. I wasn't too big of a soda drinker but I drank lots of hot tea. The headaches during the first week were horrible and now I am fine. You don't want to put yourself through headaches and surgery at the same time. (Diet Dr Pepper was a preference of mine too). So now I drink lots of Sobe 0 cal lifewater, crystal lite and Decaf Tea.

Good suggestion - thanks.

I remember when I had kidney stone issues in the hospital, they wouldn't give me any soda and the headaches sucked.

I used to drink up to 4 liters of regular dr. pepper a day, I also would drink 6-12 beers a couple of times a week, I stopped drinking soda and beer daily about a year before the surgery and allowed myself a few of each beverage once a week, the eventually twice a month, once a month then one last time 2 weeks before the surgery.

Now at 8 months out I haven't touched either beverage, though I do drink coffee, as a matter of fact I only drink Water and coffee these days and my coffee only has skim milk in it... no sugar or sweetners

I haven't had alcohol as I was also told to wait about a year before drinking.

No supervised diet for you?? Oh, I'm so jealous!! Maybe it's different for me since I'm in California and the rules are different by state? I'm not sure. But yes, I submitted paperwork for approval back in Jan and was told I needed a 3 month supervised diet with the surgeon's nutritionist before approval can be given. You're so lucky!!!

We will see, I only have what they told me over the phone -- 3 months isn't too bad -- some people have 6 months. I am just glad we are blessed with great insurance.

There may be a way to approximate the taste of Dr. Pepper using fruit juices or other flavors. I know that amaretto and coke tastes like Dr. Pepper. maybe a sugar free amaretto Syrup and some combination of fruit juices (grape? Prune? apple?)

Thank you! Some members of my family have suggested it but i'm not sure it's for me. I also want to get to a stable healthy weight before entertaining anything like that.

I think maybe it's just because it's sweet, but when I drink a lot of chocolate Protein shakes I crave soda less. Iced tea is my savior, I don't mind the unsweetened flavor. A couple of years ago I quit soda cold turkey and stuck wtih it for a year and a half. No idea why I started back up again, but it is so hard to quit.

You can also try adding pieces of fruit to your Water, it will naturally flavor it and if you step out from the lemon/lime arena it can be really satisfying and different. I like oranges and love berries in mine.

I had to do 6 months of nutrition visits. I have Anthem BCBS. My last one is April 1st.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
