How long before I can comfortably climb in bed?

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody,

It just occured to me that I actually have to climb into my bed. I have a step stool to help, but very little.(I'm really not that short, lol, it's just that big of a bed) This seems like it may be a "not so good idea" for the first few days. So, basically I'm wondering how long I'll be sleeping in the recliner (or is it a bad idea too?) Help, suggestions, comments, please?

A recliner's a great idea. I stayed in hospital for 3 nights and had the bed raised at the feet and head so it didn't put such a strain on my stomach (like a recliner), but by the time I left I was good to lie flat on my stomach by the 4th night. As soon as you feel comfortable try sleeping in your bed, but until then the recliner should be fine.

The more you move the less chance you will have getting adheasions. Before they would release me I had to show that I could get in and out of bed. I didn't use the recliner at all. Straight from hospital bed to my own bed. I found that the recliner actually made my back hurt. Pluse the more you move the better you will feel.;) Since your bed is big and need a step stool the recliner may work. You will know what you can and can not tolerate.

My bed is super tall and my doctor told me I will need a stepstool for a few nights. I'm trying out two of them to see which I prefer before surgery! I was going to buy a recliner but decided not to and to just make do and use another bedroom for a lower bed if I have to!

My bed is high, too. I was in the hospital for three nights and was able to get into my bed the first night home. Turning from side to side was more uncomfortable than getting in, but since I'm a back sleeper I was okay.

I have a high bed too! It was a little tricky at first but I figured it out pretty quick. I kind of backed in and swung my legs around. I think after two or three days I got in and out with out even thinking about it. Just be patient and try different ways until you find one that works. I think that you should sleep in which ever place will give you the best rest. Good Luck on your recovery!

I stayed in a recliner for about 5 days. even when you get in bed you may have to put pillows around you so you can sleep in kinda up right postition. It gets better pretty fast though..

I slept on the couch with my back propped into a reclining position for 1 week after surgery. I found lying flat was too painful of a position to get out of.

I have heard (from forums, blog & vlogs) to get a small, firm pillow to hold against your belly while getting up from bed or a chair. Also it helps with the cough out the anesthesia. I am def. going to get one. Has anyone tried this?

It took me about a week to sleep comfortably in my bed and it's low, my advice would be to take it slow and if your climbing up there and don't feel comfortable don't go any further.

I needed painkillers for the first week to knock me out so I could sleep comfortably as i'm a stomach sleeper.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
