I had my band done on the 7th of April.

first of all let me give you the background. I'm 5'9", surgery weight of 530lbs., 27 years old. Anyways, I'm in big doubts of having this done. I'm constintly tired, my back has numbness & sore as hell. During the surgery they had to "open" me up because of a large liver. My Dr. who is very good, nicked my sleen, so i had lost some blood. At this point I'm just tired & really full of self pitty. I feel nausues alot lately. can someone here help me out. I find it hard to get answers & help do to my size.

Hi Kombat -

Sorry for the problems you've experienced. I would imagine that a lot of your current back pain is from being somewhat immobile after your open surgery. Many people report being stiff and sore after surgery - I imagine that we are in some uncomfortable positions while we're under anesthesia, but we're asleep so we can't/don't shift our positions. Also, your surgery was probably longer than usual, since you had to be converted to open, and then the problem with your nicked spleen.

As long as there are no further complications due to the surgery itself, you should be feeling better every day. Again, I would expect you to feel somewhat like hell since you had an open procedure.

Once this healing phase is behind you, you will undoubtedly learn to love your band. It's certainly my best buddy!

Best of luck to you, and hang in there!

Kombat, Donali is absolutely right. What you experienced during surgery is very unfortunate, and your healing phase will likely be longer than those of people with uncomplicated surgeries. I'm so sorry you had to go through that! :mad: But the good news is that it's over and the worst is behind you.

Take care of yourself! Healing takes time and it takes REST. The worst thing you can do is to do too much too soon, even though it's hard to accept the limitations you might have right now. But each day means more healing and soon enough you'll be feeling fine.

Good luck, and please let us know how you're doing. :(

If you are still nausues you can have your doctor give you something to stop that.. Don't be in pain or feel sick if you dont have to.. Call your doctor. If you don't want to take something else the health food store has a mint tea that is really good.

I know having surgery is no fun and thinking you were going in for a lap and woke up to find you had open surgery was a little upsetting.. Just know that this healing time will not last forever. Give yourself the next week or two to heal. Just take it easy and do not push yourself. You are young and that is on your side. For your back pain just use alot of pillows to make your self as comfortable as possible. I had like 10 pillows and my husband thought I was nuts-But I was comfey:}

If you have any more questions just let us know..

Take care

Hi Kombat,

Everyone has given you great advice. Make sure to call the surgeon and get something for the nausea and ask about the numbness in your back. Do you have anyone helping you? Are you able to go for walks yet? Walking might help get some of the kinks out. You have a right to feel as you do and a little pampering would go a long way right now. Like everyone else said, because of complications you're road to recovery will be a little longer but your band will there waiting for you when you are ready. Even though it was a rough start you've made a great decision and you will love how it changes your life. Take care of yourself and let us all know how your doing.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
