Pain in your chest when you swallow

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am 10 days out today. I feel great but I do notice that when I eat to fast,or big of bite,or dont chew it up enough,( I am not sure which one it is cause i think I have done it all) I get this sharp pain in my chest for a min.

Has anyone gotten this or knows what I am doing wrong to create it.It doesnt happen with every bite.It can happen with liquids or mushys which have only consisted of Soup, jello, yogurt, cottage cheese, and mashed potatoes for the 1st time last night.

Thank you in advance.

I may not have had the surgery yet, but I'm a nurse who has dealt with patients with difficulty with this. Try eating a very small amount, using smaller utensils to help guide, even measuring spoons. If it ever gets worse, call your doctor. Mine warned me that a possible complication could be stricture, and they can dilate it open easily to prevent this.

Prolly all of the above. My stomach capacity has been told to me that it is 25% of what was a normal sized stomach and currently able to hold 100cc or 1/2 cup of food un-stretched. I am un-able to stretch the lining becuz it has yet to completely heal. So, I have problems with vomiting currently when dealing with solids. I take about 1/2 hour to eat a 1/2 cup of food of whatever it is. That's a long long time .. for me. I used to be able to do that in may be 2 minutes. So, it's not not chewing, it's not eating to quickly. BUT, it might be eating too much, becuz 1/2 cup of food .. isn't a lot. And unless it's Haagendaz, or pure animal fat, it is NOT going to be enough calories consumed per meal. That's the problem for me .. getting the calories and nutrient in to heal and have energy. The vomiting has me being an involuntary bulimic at the moment. Not fun. Soup for me.

I've had this too, especially if I take too big of a sip. I decided to start taking the Prilosec my doctor sent me home with as well and it seems to be helping.

I will get it when I drink or eat to quickly. Some days I just forget to slow down. I eat with a baby spoon so I can make sure to take small bites. I take at least 1/2 an hour to eat 1/2 a cup of anything. Although tonight it took me more than an hour to get my oatmeal down. I do find it hard to eat slower but I would rather take the time to train myself how to be patient with food so I have a successful result in the end (a better relationship and understanding between me and food).

I was sent home with a script of Levsin for esophigeal cramps.Couldn't live without it. Cramps would grab me ALL the time without it. I was told that it was very normal and would gradually subside. I hope you get to feeling better soon.

Hello 9 years,

I did have this right after surgery. Even if I took the tiniest sips sometimes it would still hurt. It did this for at least the first 6 weeks, but in those weeks it would gradually get better.

Unless it's doubling over in pain bad, I'd say you are ok. Do try to take the smallest bites and sips possible, and a little patience - you will overcome it. I'm 6 months out now and sometimes I even forget I used to get that pain anymore, so it does really go away.

:) I hope this helps.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
