Bathroom Issues

Recommended Posts

Okay so I've seen a few posts here and there about different issues after surgery so I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this. I was very constipated a few weeks ago when I saw my doc for my 3 month visit so she put me on a stool softener. I've been taking them twice a day since and in the last week I have had three days of really bad cramping and major diarrhea. I am thinking maybe I should only take one stool softener a day instead of two? I have been on them before (when I was preggo) but never had this issue. I haven't changed my diet any, eating the same stuff I have been for months now!

Sounds like you should cut back to one. Stool softeners aren't suppose to cause those kind of issues.

I started having Constipation this week, as soon as I started taking the Calcium citrate. I remembered then how Calcium and Iron both have that effect on me. This is my second day of Miralax and today I took 2 stool softeners. I'm going to have to eat a prune everytime I take a calcium I guess. I have quit eating until I can get things moving again!

Hope your problem straightens up soon!

I agree with Kitty. Constant use of stool softeners can be bad too. Try Miralaz, which is basically a super adsorbent platic that simply moves through you.

Yep- been on all of it- if you overdo the stool softeners- it can have the same effect as laxative- the miralax you just sprinkle on your food and you never know you have taken it- it is gentle and is healthier for your body long term- at least that is what drs tell me.

I use the benefiber to keep moving and only take a stool softener if I hit day 3 with no bm. I have only had to do this twice in 4 months

I have tried doing the Fiber and it just gives me HORRIBLE gas with pain! I've been doing just one pill and things seem to be moving just like they should! LOL

The Miralax is almost a guarantee of NO gas, it's pretty benign, I suppose there is always the exceptions though.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
