bad taste

Recommended Posts

I am 8 days after surgery and get a horrible bitter, metallic, dry, sometimes fatty taste and sensation in my mouth and my teeth feel coated even after cleaning. Has anyone else experienced this and/or found a way to combat it? :o)

Nearly everyone has it. It is due partly to a process called ketosis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketosis , it is basically due to burning off of fat. I still get it after 90 pounds down. It may take 6 months or more to clear up. Take advantage of it as your appitite is off and it is easier to NOT eat.

It sounds like you are having reflux problems. I am almost 2 1/2 months out and I am still dealing with it. The best thing I have found that works with the taste is 3 hours mints "I found them at Target" the feeling on your teeth will eventually go away, but until then try brushing more often. Also warm/hot tea works well with washing the taste down.

I agree with Rootman...ketosis. I went through it too. You can buy the ketostix if you are unsure.

Thanks everyone for your input. Reassuring to know, I have found extra brushing and hot tea and chewing gum all helps. It seems to be diminishing somewhat now .... :o)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
