Anyone who has PCOS... (TMI)

Recommended Posts

Over the last couple years, my period has gotten super irregular. Just told I probably had PCOS and is the reason why we haven't been able to get pregnant these past few years. My periods are very heavy, unpredictable, and I have bled at times for 2-6 months at a time. My doctor said that really the only treatment is losing weight. I'm getting sleeved march 22. I just want to hear from any others who also have PCOS. Has it gotten better? Have you gotten pregnant?

you can get pregnant with pcos. i have seen it many time with my pcos patients. research have shown even with 10% body weight loss most women will have increase in ovulation. when you are obese, even if you are not diabetic your body is secreting a lot of insulin to keep your blood glucose under control. to much insulin can prevent ovulation. by losing weight your insulin secretion should decrease. that's why we put women on metformin (same concept). good luck to you

I have had it for years, at one point I had to have a D&C stop the bleeding. The best long term control for me was taking birth control pills and really limiting my sugar and crabs and taking metformin. Now after losing the weight I do not take metformin or the pill and every thing is normal with the occasional out break on my face.

I have PCOS and it was regulated well with birthcontrol, but recently had to get off birthcontrol but it seems it's still being regulated with the IUD that I have. I am interested to see if the PCOS just goes away completely after I have my surgery.

Thanks for replying everyone! I am also looking forward to see how it will work after surgery. I've been following a somewhat strict low carb diet to lose my 5% before the surgery, so I feel that this will help. My doctor and I also thought it wouldn't be worth the risk to go on birth control until after surgery at very least. I haven't been on them in 7 years, so I'd like to not have to go back on them. :P

I was diganosed in 1998 as a newleywed. I remember at the time of diagnosis I had been bleeding every day for a year. I have taken metformin ever since and have low-carbed on & off through the years however at 38, my cycles are still pretty irregular.

Fast forward to Dec 2010. At my first nut visit while I was in the waiting room, there was a poster on the wall with a picture of the human body with arrows pointing to all of the body systems and the % reduction of ailments people experience with WLS. _% reduction in asthma, _% reduction of joint problems etc....I was so excited to see 100% reduction of cycle irregularity due to PCOS! This was a huge sign for me that I was doing the right thing. Knowing that I'd suggest you start knitting baby booties :)

I have PCOS.

I have two beautiful daughters.

My first I had before I was diagnosed... and was only able to get preg. after I started south beach and cut out just about all carbs. I thought my weight was causing fertility problems... so I lost a bunch and got preg. Little did I know there was so much more to then that. Even my labor was effected by my PCOS. Then when we started to try again we had many miscarriages. I was half hearted on south beach so I was able to conceive but not keep it viable. Finally I was diagnosed with PCOS, got on Metforim and had our youngest. After the pregnancy the Metforim wasn't has effective so I started looking into WLS and here we are today! We started trying to conceive in May of 2004 - my last period had been in Jan 2004. I got preg with no period in August 2004, delivered in May 2005. I had maybe one or two periods not counting bleeding from miscarriages. I was diagnosed in July 2007 and went on Metforim that month. I had zero periods but conceived my youngest in April 2008. Since having her in Dec 2008 I've had maybe 4 periods.

I would not recommend birth control as a way to control your PCOS. You already have a compromised hormone regulation and reception problem. As a result your body floods with all the different hormones used to signal and regulate ALL of your bodies major systems: metabolism, immunity, fertility, etc. Adding more hormones like birth control is a kin to being in a crowded room with everyone talking loudly and you just shouting over the noise.

Metforim is great as it helps 'tune' your hormone receptors a bit better. There definite side effects so consider them before taking.

There are a few other options as well (though I'd say VSG is the best option out there. As your weight decreases your symptoms will be easier to manage etc.) If you haven't checked out soulcysters yet please do. Its alot like this community with really supportive and knowledgeable folks.

I'd consider metformin if I wasn't already going through the surgery process. I've got such an irregular and heavy period, the last two days I'm in the bathroom almost every hour. Trying a menstrual cup today, I just read about them last night. The one I have is disposable, and can last up to 12 hours. So far so good. :) I am looking into getting a reusuable one.

I can't wait until my surgery in a couple weeks. It feels like I'm going through a rebirthing process where I will have a totally different life. I am very excited!

Its really funny you should mention this! I have PCOS and have had terrible trouble conceiving. I had my first when I was much younger, but it was right after I got off the pill....then took me many years of trying again....after many drs and thinking if one more doctor told me I was fat and stressed I would strangle them!!!!! I finally got pg after seeing a fertility dr....

My periods are very very irregular!!! I might have one or two a year.......Fast forward last year. I had my surgery on Dec 14th....w/n two weeks my cycle started, this was after loosing almost 25#s....then the first part of Feb...guess what...there it is again!!! Talk about shocker!!!! Now Im waiting to see what March is going to bring!!! Im now 60#s lower.....I just have to be careful because I would be afraid to get pg so soon after surgery ya know!

Its just crazy how our bodies react....

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
