OilSooner 23 Posted March 3, 2011 So I get a call yesterday that my surgeon wants me to have an endoscopy in the next few days in prep for surgery. Is this normal? If so, what is required as far as a time committment off work? I guess I could get one late in the day, then be back to work the next day. But, it would be a bummer not to be able to eat anything all day.
SKCUNNINGHAM 298 Posted March 3, 2011 So I get a call yesterday that my surgeon wants me to have an endoscopy in the next few days in prep for surgery. Is this normal? But, it would be a bummer not to be able to eat anything all day. This is absolutely normal, and is to be expected. It is a one day committment. You will have to have someone drive you to and from the place you are having the endoscopy - you will not be able to drive after it is over. Think about it - your surgeon wants to look at your stomach prior to going in and doing the sleeve - make sure everything is normal. My endoscopy was scheduled for a Saturday - so I ddn't lose any time from work - maybe your doctor offers that as an option.
OilSooner 23 Posted March 3, 2011 Saturday would be awesome! Thanks for the reply. Also: did it hurt?
Firefly2 9 Posted March 3, 2011 I completely agree with Skcunningham. This is totally normal. Your doc wants to look at your tummy. You're put out for a grand total of 10-15 minutes and I too did it on a Saturday. It was totally quick and easy-peazy!
Billy363627 15 Posted March 3, 2011 Hey you get some good drugs...lol Anyway it is completely normal . I wouldn't worry anything about it. Probably just a test doc requires before going in.. They did an upper Gi on me before surgery.
apw0 7 Posted March 3, 2011 Oh, it doesn't hurt at all. The most painful thing is getting the IV started. That's the part that I hate the most. And yes, they give you some awesome drugs to induce the "twilight sleep". They gave me the propofol. I'm not saying that what Michael Jackson did was right, but after my endoscopy, let's just say that I have a better understanding. You'll be fine, and try not to worry about it. They don't like you having anything to eat or drink, so you probably won't want to schedule it late in the day. Going the entire day without eating and especially drinking, would probably be very difficult. Let me know how you make out.
TijuanaPlication 87 Posted March 3, 2011 I didn't have any sedation and was able to drive myself home. I had mine in the afternoon so had just half a day off work. You have be strong to forgo sedation, as having the scope down your throat really makes you retch BIG TIME!!
OilSooner 23 Posted March 3, 2011 ^^^ haha, not thanks. I'd rather get sedated than have that thing in my throat with me knowing about it.
