MJK Media 0 Posted June 22, 2006 I Have Had Alot Of People At Work Ask Are You Sure You Can Eat That, Its Driving Me Nuts. Anyone Else Have Issues With This As Well? I Think I Am More So Tired Of Explaining How The Band Works.
Terri-ific 0 Posted June 22, 2006 I has similar problems at first, but now everyone seems more worried that I "don't eat enought to keep a bird alive." (Maybe if its a HUGE bird) Anyway, people like to focus their attention on others so they don't have to look at themselves. Anyway, good luck to you and your journey! Don't let anyone get you down. You are doing this for yourself whether anyone else understands or not! Terri
Ceparano 0 Posted June 22, 2006 Since explanations on the band have already been given, I'd just say," you are so sweet to be concerned, but I'm just fine!" and just continue on with whatever your eating. Roberta
MJK Media 0 Posted June 22, 2006 Oh that is very PC, I was thinking, well if I can't my body will give it back to me in a protective mucous bubble I like to call it recycling. is that too harsh... Ceparano 0 Posted June 22, 2006 I kinda like your reply........but we don't want to give them too much information......or do we??? LOL Roberta
Marlluvia 1 Posted June 22, 2006 Since we are talking about co-workers and what not. I am not banded yet, but hopefully I will have a successful outcome. I wasn't planning on telling anyone at work about my procedure. Perhaps only my really close friend. With that in mind, how do I answer questions about my weight. God willing and I lose, they will want to know what I'm doing, and in detail because that's just the way they are. They won't settle for cutting back, etc. These are some nosey people I work with. Any advice would be appreciated.
Wheetsin 714 Posted June 22, 2006 People ask me if I can eat it, or tell me where we eat is up to me since I'm the one who needs the special diet. It doesn't bother me a bit. They don't know, and I'd rather they ask than make assumptions.
MJK Media 0 Posted June 22, 2006 you know that true, i am not used to people caring so much, I think I have hidden behind food so much I still have alot of baggage to unpack so to speak malluvia, when it comes to dropping the weight the simple statement of I took control of my life and a small pat on the shoulder is all that is needed. Ceparano 0 Posted June 22, 2006 Marlluvia, I'd say, I'm so glad to see that someone has noticed I'm losing weight. I've changed my eating habits. The same way you see me eat at work is the same way I eat at home; and I've started an exercise program. I hope I can keep it up. I am a very private person by nature so I only told one close friend outside of my family. I don't think anyone should feel obligated to reveal their wls surgery. Of course, that is just my not so humble opinion. Congratulations on your surgery date. Roberta

I Think I Am More So Tired Of Explaining How The Band Works. I'd be tempted to print up cards titled "FAQs on my band", make it somewhat funny, and just start handing 'em out! Otherwise, I agree with the smile and something along the lines of "Oh, aren't you sweet to be concerned for me" and leave it at that.
HeatherGurl 0 Posted June 22, 2006 My friends and family are so old school and out of it, they thought I was crazy! I wish I would have never told a soul. The people that found out look at me like I am cheating since I am losing weight now and I am not so big. Just a difficult subject. A lot of family knows but they don't talk to me about it, I don't think it is their business.
Constance 0 Posted June 22, 2006 marlluvia, I'm not telling peeps at work either and I know they'll be all up in my business when they see me losing. I am planning to say , "I'm slowing way down when I eat and cutting back on portions. But also I've cut out bread and processed foods", because that is what they will witness, right? You could maybe make up a fake diet supplement. Then sell it to them! haha! "Here it is! It's 50$ a bottle and it works for me!" Seriously though, I think if you tell them everything you are doing EXCEPT for the banded part, they will buy it. (Buy it, meaning your story, not the phoney supplements.) Leona06 0 Posted June 22, 2006 I think that the more we tell people about the surgery and about our plans, the quicker they will stop asking about it because they become annoyed. But also to erase this stigma that everyone has with WLS... That is the most annoying. But Knowledge is power and spreading the knowledge is even more powerful. Once people know that this surgery is not life-threatening, is life-changing, and not as bad as people think, then maybe people will stop making you feel guilty for trying to better yourself. Don't feel embarrassed because you've taken control! Be proud, be strong, and share your success... brag a little - you deserve it!
lisah25 3 Posted June 22, 2006 You are too funny!!!! Why didn't I think of those cards????? LOL Roberta Hum, maybe a business idea? I'm lucky, DH was banded almost 2 years ago, and is very open about it, so our family and friends are already familiar with it.
