Post-Op Diet - Protein shakes???

Recommended Posts

I've read a lot of others posts pertaining to Post-Op diets, but I am somewhat confused still about the liquid stage and Protein drinks.

My question is: Are we allowed to add stuff (fruits, PB, syrups, yogurt, SF Jello powders, etc...) into our Protein drinks/shakes in the full liquid stage?

I CANNOT stand the smell or after taste of the Protein Drinks, but have found that if I can add a little PB, Syrup, etc...I can handle it.

Yes you can add those things. You aren't supposed to have any chunks so put it in a blender if you're putting chunks of fruit in there. The SF syrups work great for this!

My nutritionist didn't advise putting anything into the Protein shake. i was having problems, gagging and vomiting and she suggested unjury Protein shakes, which you can only get online It took getting used to, but it is not that bad, chocolate splender is the best. Had my surgery 2 weeks ago, 24 pounds down!! good luck

Yes...Unjury are the one's I have. I like the chicken Soup, but all the others stink and have a bad after taste. Granted, they're not as bad as others I've tried, but they're still ooh. Just thought if I could add some Syrup or fruit I could drink them with no problem.

I used and still use Bariatric Advantage Protein in vanilla and chocolate. . I love adding PB to the chocolate one (makes it taste like a reeses peanutbutter cup) but use the smooth PB if your going to do that. . . I also love to add different flavored extracts to the vanilla one and pumpkin pie spice or nutmeg to it. . . tastes really yum. . . try mixing the vanilla Protein Powder to a vanilla greek yogurt, that is my favorite thing ever! Good luck!

Yesterday I added a small teaspoon of instant Decaf coffee to my vanilla shake. It was very good. I also invested in a very good blender so my shakes are really like soft milk shakes which make them fun (er) to drink. My doc said I had to avoid any chunks, seeds, peelings or anything that would make my stomach work hard.

Easy does it!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
