Psych consult

Recommended Posts

I had my screening with the bariatric nurse and the nutritionist yesterday and got their approval. :clap2: Next step is the psych consult, which I just scheduled for Monday. I have to go in and take some type of test, then meet with the psychologist again in a week to go over the results. So what kind of test is it? For some reason I'm now getting paranoid that I'm really a total nut job and they won't let me have the surgery! :nervous Anyone care to clue me in on the type of questions they ask?

And yes, the voices in my head are telling me everything will be just fine. :)

I live out-of-town from where I had my surgery so the Dr. phoned me for the psych test...it was more of a simple conversation. He asked me about my general health history, what had I done in the past regarding my weight, why did I decide on the lapband and why now, did I tell my family and do I have good solid support....that was about it.

My psych test was a series of 200-250 true or false questions. A psychologist reviewed it and, based on my answers, determined that I was mentally fit to have the surgery. I didn't have to meet with the psychologist though.

I don't think it's anything you have to worry about. :)

Mine thought I was a binge eater and decided that I needed counseling before he would recommend me for the surgery. I had everything else that the insurance required but he was the one that put the hold on everything for about 3 months. Finally then he did release me and the same day I was approved thru my insurance and got my surgery date.

My psych test was just Q & A about my past history with dieting, etc. They just want to make sure that you are level headed about it. The only rejection he said he gave was when someone came in that was on disability and looked like she didn't need to lose too much weight and wanted to use her life savings to pay for it. He felt it was unnecessary and would put her in a financial detriment. I'm sure you will be fine. Good luck.
