I am not SURE if I am ready for this!!!!

My GB surgery is in a week, the band surgery is in a month so I started the sacred heart diet today. I did so awsome today, but tonight I blew it, and bad... I had a horrible headache, and my hubby made beer battered fish and I ate one tiny piece, and that was the start of a huge down fall.

I ate crackers, chicken nuggets, brownies and then more fish... :faint: AAAAAHHHH why do I do this? I have no will power when it comes to food. But when it comes to any thing else I'm as strong as a rock.. (smoking, drinking ect..)

Now sitting here mad at myself, I'm thinking, am I ready to do this lapband thing? I know alot of you have said you are tight in the morning and wide open at night, and I am terrified that I am going to do this and FAIL once again... I am tired of feeling like a failure, I guess I am just really scared right now...

Don't fret too much. Part of this is just knowing you ARE getting the band and kind of like the last supper syndrome. I ate pizza a couple of days b4 my surgery and now I could care less about pizza. For me, the band has been such a blessing and seems to have changed the way I look at food. It's a mental thing that happens in your mind when you decide you ARE going to succeed. YOU CAN DO THIS!! I know you can b/c I'm doing it and I don't have much will power. Keep in mind, I was just banded on May 26th.....I know I will never see the numbers I saw on the scale pre-band.....NEVER EVER AGAIN. Hang in there and start tomorrow fresh.

Hi Jen,

You can do this. I am one of those who is tight in the morning and can eat more at night. But even "wide open" with a band at night I still have restriction which stops me from doing exactly what you did tonight - and what I have done a thousand times before getting my band.

Don't beat yourself up! That's why you're getting the band - to help you with portion size.

You can do this!!

Look, honestly its fun to do those types of diets and lose a bit of weight really fast but they are CRASH diets, they're not nutritionally balanced or sound and you dont lose fat, you lose Water. Just becuase you cant stick to a stupid diet that in no way resembles the way a healthy person eats, does not mean you will not be a long term success with your band, when you get to choose a varied diet from all food groups in moderate portions over the longer haul.

I couldnt do the stupid Optifast either. I mean if we were meant to live on 3 shakes a day then wouldnt we all do so? Its in no way an indication of your ability to succeed.

Thank you all for your support,

I am jumping back on the wagon today, but I am not going to do the diet as much as I want to. I just don't think I can do it. But I can eat healthy from the four food groups.... So I am happy doing that.

Keep the faith. This is a journey, not an overnight thing. The band is a tool and hopefully when you get the restriction you will rethink what you are putting in your mouth. Good luck.

So sorry you struggled with the pre-op diet. I think most of us did. I only had to do it for 2 days altho the Doc suggested 2 weeks.

Thanks for sharing. It reminded me of how much I hated myself before I had a lap-band. I really suffered thinking why can't I do this!! Just as you are describing. I am only 7 weeks post-op and I don't beat myself all day long anymore. I had already forgotten how painful that was, day in and day out, no matter what, I was reminded that I can't eat normally. BUT NOW the band helps me focus on eating the right foods and feeling full pretty fast. People told me it would be like this and I had a hard time believing them. BUT its true for me, I am not hungry and I am very careful about what I eat because I have to. Now instead of beating myself up, I think about getting out and doing something fun, like ride bike. So different.

Best wishes, I think you'll surprised that you can acually stick with a good food plan after your off the mushies.

Keep positive, you CAN do this. Just think of what the out come is going to be and I hope that motivates you. I can't imagine what you're going through right now. I just got my date of July 27th and I'm so happy that I don't have to do a pre-op diet longer than 12 hours. Keep your chin up... I know it's easier said than done, but you will get through this. Just think of all the support you can get on LBT.

Don't be so hard on yourself. We're getting the band to help us with these things. Be patient, we're here for you.

Remember this whole thing is a process and you are just experiencing part of it now. when I get anxious, I go crazy with food. So, it was very difficult to do the preop diet being anxious about surgery and the whole idea of giving up my food.

I'm glad to know this is "normal" I am waiting for insurance approval, and in the mean time I thought I would try to cut portions, and chew more thoroughly. But my mind says "You aren't going to be able to eat bread, so you better get it now" and Pasta, and rice and cake and on and on. I'm afraid to step on the scale because I am sure that I'm gaining even more! Makes me question my resolve about the band. Am I doomed to fail at this, too?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
