Bad breathe and dry mouth, what to do?

Recommended Posts

I have noticed since my surgery that my mouth is always dry, bad breathe and now my wife noticed. I read it is because I am in Ketosis but is there any remedy. I know I probably am not drinking enough Water either. I can only get about 1 liter a day. I am down 21 pounds since my surgery date of 02-15-11. Any suggestions would be great because I like being around people but not if I have bad breathe.

Thanks

I struggled with this when I was on Protein shakes but as soon as I moved to mushies I added hot sauce to everything for flavor. If you like it and can tolerate it I suggest it not only will it add flavor at a low calorie cost but it should mask the bad breath. I did have to brush my teeth more often as well. You just got out of surgery not to long ago so check with your doctor. The one other thing that helped at 4 week I would occasionally have a small amount of natural applesauce if I felt lightheaded this made for better breath as well.

im going through this at the moment, and i also have 'furry teeth' which are annoying me.

I suck on sugar free mints alot! And hope that when i move onto solids, these symptons should leave me forever!! :D

It will get better once you start eating food again. The texture of the food helps to clean off the teeth and tongue, for now lots of Water, teeth brushing and gum lol. I remember that furry tongue feel - it was awful. Congrats on your sleeve!!!!!

Soe docs don't allow hot sauce for up to 8 weeks, check with him first.

Chew some sugarfree gum. People say you should chew gum to mitigate hunger but it never worked for me. But chewing gum to mitigate thirst or banish "swamp mouth" always works. It should be something strong and flavorful. I chew Orbit (the ones in the wrappers, not the ones in the blister packs).

I don't know how that meshes with the surgery, I haven't had any yet. But I know thats what I do when I have dry mouth.

Boy , I thought it was just me! Started sleeping with a humidifier in my room due to the dry nose and mouth and that helped. Have brushed my teeth to the point of being silly but the thing that helped the most was this dry mouth mouthwash. Hate to mention names but theyadvertize a lot on TV and the name starts with a B.smile.gif

Plain Water didn't sit well with me until about 5 weeks out. Try flavored water, crystal light, or diet tea. That should help you get your fluids in and improve your breath.

I had the worst breathe till I was on mushies as well, I never knew what it was... I figured it was the Protein shakes.. My husband said it was awful, and nothing I did got rid of it.,. Glad its gone!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
