Lap Band Surgery - No Pain Meds!

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I'm freaking out because I am flying to MX on Monday for my Lap Band surgery and for some reason my surgeon, Dr. Joya does not supply anything more then basic pain reliever like Tylenol from what I understand.

Knowing that, a few weeks ago I went to my primary care physician here in the states and told him about my surgery and told him I need some kind of liquid pain medicine. I am a HUGE baby when it comes to pain and I'd rather be safe then sorry.

Well now that surgery is a few weeks away I went to go fill the prescription and where I believe I left it, it is missing! I have looked everywhere. He prescribed me some kind of codeine elixir. I called to get him to call it into the pharmacy, explaining I had lost it and the nurse called back and said he had refused to fill it!

I told my husband and he said it's probably becaue the Dr. thinks I took it already or something because pain relievers can be abused!

I have left 2 messages for my Dr. and he is not calling me back. I can't believe he thinks I'm some druggie that is trying to get more meds???!!!

I need this for my surger, what am I to do????????????:help::help:

I didn't take anything, not even Tylenol. You might not need it. THe pain wasn't there for me. If you do need something to take the edge off, most find that Tylenol does it. Get som Tylenol PM and it will help make you sleep.

Good luck to you and hope your experience is painless.

I didn't take anything but liquid Tylenol, after surgery. That was every once in awhile, during the first days post-op.

Good luck with your surgery. Let us know how it goes...

Just read your journal, you seem to be a strong determined person who will get to her goal. An inspiration to people like me who are not currently banded. Good luck in MX on Monday. Remember on that plane trip home, you will be traveling toward your new life.

I wouldn't worry too much. My doc prescribed me liquid codiene, I filled it but never used it, not even a tylenol. You should be fine.

Beachee Girl,

When you find the prescription you lost, take it back to your doctor. It'll restore your doctors' faith in you, but mostly, you'll just feel better about it. :)

Just so you see the other side... I used ALL my pain meds. I took it every 4 hours until it ran out, and then I started using liquid tylenol. I also had staples, which irritated my skin. But a lot of people use pain meds too.

I have 50 mg demerols and 25 mg phenergan suppositories. I only used the suppositories to sleep well. I did not need pain med. IT was the least painful surgery I have ever had. I WAS SHOCKED...... I do think that I have a high pain tolerance. However, I have raved about how painless this surgery was. When you wake up from anesthesia ask for it repeatly. They can give you a BIG dose. By the time you go home you will be okay.....

Good luck...... don't worry.....

I'm glad for your mental security that the Dr. called in a new one for you, but I agree with the others, you likely will not need it. they put something for pain in my IV not long after I got out of surgery, but that was it. They told me if I needed it to ask, I never needed it. I flew home from Mexico, a 5 hour plane ride, followed by another 5 in a car, and only took one shot of liquid Tylenol. You will be fine...relax!! This is likely the best thing you have ever done for yourself!! I do agree with Donna tho, find the original, take it in so THEY can destroy it, and restore the faith!!

Good Luck...you are on your "weigh"!!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
