Sipping is a bummer

Recommended Posts

I am trying to get all the practices that will be needed into routine now, hoping to have the surgery in April or May.

I have found it fairly easy to chew the heck out of everything, and actually find it has me eating less since I feel full sooner.

But sipping liquid slowly all day and never while eating is proving more challenging . I forget to do it, then find I am way behind on my fluids, and also have trouble keeping it to a small amount of Fluid.

I am thinking that the fact drinking a lot will cause me to likely vomit may be the best enforcer of this habit! But I would love to hear of any tips or ways you have managed to do this.

you only have to sip for the first 3 months or so...

I am amost 8 months out now and can take several big swigs/gulps at a time. I would not try Chugging it down though thththtth

no real tips, just wanted you to know that part does not last forever

well I here to tell you once you have surgery you will have no problems with sipping slowly and if you take a big drink it is like take a knife and stabbing you in the stomach.. I used to be the king of drinking a 20 coke or Water in about 5 minutes. Now It takes me a while about 30 minutes but I am only 23 days post surgery. you will have no problem with sipping I promise you ..

Thank you both! I am heartened to think it could be better later- and it is just as I thought that my body will enforce it by letting me know not to guzzle.

Even though my nutritionist wants me to do all of it now, I will relax a but knowing my sleeve will let me know if I do it wrong!

Yeah you don't have to sip forever. I am 6 1/2 months and I can drink a 20 oz. bottle of Water in under 5 minutes. I am sooooo happy becuz sipping seriously got on my last nerve. LOL.

Good luck and you will LOVE YOUR SLEEVE!!!

My nutritionist told me to practice the chewing till it's the consistancy of applesauce. If you don't chew well, you'll probably see it again. I didn't want to, so I'm a chew, chew, chewer!

I also practiced the no drinking while eating pre-op. Now that I'm post-op, I am taking little sips to try and get more Protein down. I am never hungry so if my stomach empties out sooner, no big deal, I could go all day and not eat. I basically have to force myself to eat most of the time. When the swelling in my stomach goes down I may not need to do that.

It's like a full time job trying to get in all the Protein and liquids I'm suppose to be consuming! Use every trick you can come up that works for you!

I've started using Protein Bars to help sneak in a little more protein. I love the "Pure Protein" chocolate Peanut Butter ones! I'm going back to work in 2 days and they will be handy to take along.

As far as sipping goes, it stinks, but it's what most of us are forced to do.

It sounds like your surgeon and mine are of the same mindframe. I too was told to not swallow anything until it is the consistency of applesauce. However, I wasn't told to really practice all this stuff pre-op and now my surgery is in 1 week. Would it do any good to start now?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
