Where are the 50s ???

Recommended Posts

Ignore any negativity! I am 53 and only 5 months post-op. my parents are in their 80s and doing well so there's a good chance I could live as long. I didn't want to get old and be 100lbs over weight. As one ages the adverse effects of being obese are magnified. You are making a decision to take charge of your health, well-being and improve the quality of the rest of your life. No surgery is without risk but to me the risk was totally worth it.

pre-surgery weight 325; surgery date 2/28/2013; surgery weight 307; 8 weeks past-op weight 281.4; 12 weeks post-op 274; 4 month post-op 266.2; 5 month post-op 262.6

I'm 1 week shy of being 9 months post sleeve, and I just turned 56 years old this month. I had a complete hysterectomy when I was 31 years old. I lost 45 pounds on my pre surgery 6 month diet, and I have lost another 68 pounds since surgery for a total of 113 pounds. I started out a size 26W, and 285 pounds. I'm now a size 12/14, and 172 pounds with only 22 pounds to my goal weight of 150 pounds.

I feel better than I did in my late 30's, and are healthier than I have been in over 20 years! I'm off all my prescription drugs with the exception of my hormone pill, and my fusion Vitamins. I can now ride my bike for over 10 miles without feeling like I want to die! I walk our dogs for about 4-5 miles and come back feeling great! I can now wear a swimsuit, and not feel like everyone is staring at me with thoughts of, "What is that fat lady doing in a swimsuit"? I can enjoy doing all kinds of things with our 3 & 5 year old grandkids, and not have to explain to them WHY grandma can't jump on the trampoline, or get down on the floor, and play with them, because NOW I CAN! :) I would not change my getting sleeved for anything! Best decision I could have ever made! My goal is to make it to my weight loss goal of 150 pounds by November 6, 2013 which is my 1 years anniversary since I was sleeved! I only have 22 pounds to get there, so hopefully I will do it! :)

NewBeginningsForMe2012 and tparkerc59 you are both so inspiring. I have my surgery in 2 days. I look forward to taking my grandchildren to the beach and for walks without have to stop to catch my breath. I look forward to baking special birthday cakes for them for many years to come.

I just got really tickled! Wen to my "content/followed" and opened this thread. It came up to the first post and said "All I see is a conversation about wrinkles!"

Well, um, today, I looked in the mirror and I swear my neck and face look like a roadmap! I've lost down almost 20 pounds in the last 8 weeks and boy, does my face/neck suffer when I get back to my goal weight range. I NEED FILLER!

Anybody else in my age range had any fillers?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
