Where are the 50s ???

Recommended Posts

I was 12 months into my menopause when I got surgery... my doc said double up on your birth control anyway... wanna be a momma? I guess all the hormones released from the fat can make your body do some crazy things... including hot flashes and pregnancy!

Hello to everyone. Thanks for posting your experiences. I am 56 and scheduled to have gastric sleeve in June. I am from Canada and will be traveling alone due to the cost factor. I am anxious about this and hearing from you who are in my age bracket just reinforces what I am doing. Thank you

Kat

Kat - Welcome here, and you'll even find those in their 60s rockin' their sleeves! I'm having a hard time right now, but still sooo glad I did this. Congrats on making the decision for a better healthier you!

Hey all.

I've spotted a couple of times post-sleeve even though I'm about two years since my last real period. For hot flashes, I mostly have them at night. I kick off the blanket, stick my feet out from under the sheet and turn over my pillow. If I'm still hot after that sometimes I step out the back door for a minute or two. That usually fixes it for me.

Aloha Kat!!! Ah, you're 51 and about to be sleeved; how I wish I could have had this done at 51!!!! The last 7 years of my life would have been SO much better; I had this done last October 3 days after my 58th.....now 7 months later, I feel like I am 41!!! Hopefully this forum will help you feel less anxious and MORE eager!!!! Take a look at my blog (link below) if you would like to see what you might be in for; I have chronicled my experience each Sunday since the end of October and each week just gets better and better. Keep us posted and congrats on your decision.....

Hi Kat , welcome....i just turned 59 on April 24th and sleeved 1 week ago today on May 2nd.... I too wish i would have done this years ago.... No regrets at all!!!

****************

Day 7 ------- today was my 7-day post-op doctor appointment...

328 - highest weight - (Nov 2011 - began the process for WLS - started high Protein diet while doing all the insurance required appointments)

294 - day of surgery

278 - 7 days post-op

(drum roll please)

-16 lbs ..... OMG ..... i am so shocked..... I know i will NOT continue loosing at this rate, but i am so excited!!! Total weight loss from day 1 is 50 pounds!!!

Things I think about:

1- 50 pounds that my arthritic knees, hips and back no longer have to support! (they are happy with me) :)

2- My blood sugar is under control, so no more diabetic medicine... (i was on metformin, glyberyde (sp) and Byetta shots)... my doctor told me he would hold off putting me on insulin shots, until we checked my numbers after surgery) **** numbers normal! ****

3- I am NOT hungry. I use the clock to tell me when to add fuel to my body....i am ""Eating to live" no longer, "Living to eat"

hope you all had a super fantastic day,

g'nite

Kat1, welcome. I too went to a different country by myself and it was fine. Try and see if the hospital will put you in contact with someone else having their surgery at the same time so that you could contact them by email and maybe feel a little better.

I flew from the UK to Europe and like yourself was anxious, journey home on flight was OK followed by a 3 hr car ride. I travelled well but was just tired.

Hi Kat: You may want to take a look at my WEEK 4 on my blog.....even though I was with my husband when I got out of the hospital, I wasn't prepared for the sights and sounds and smell of all the food around me......it was overwhelming leaving the safe haven of the hospital to the real world. Be sure to be as prepared as you can mentally and with things you can have for the trip home. You can see WEEK 4 here: http://www.queenofcrop.com/archives/2011/11/

UK Cathy's advice was really good; see if you can find a buddy....it helps, just like this forum!

Keep going Sandy. I am smiling as I read your post. Thanks a bunch. I look at my grandsons and say to myself "yes in one year we will be riding our bikes together". Silly eh? The little things I am looking forward to and for the arthritis to ease a bit in my knees lol.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
