Redcobra 1 Posted February 24, 2011 I am two weeks out and starting the mushies/soft food.< /p> I have found that even my protin shakes taste different. I had some chooped eggs and tuna last night and some chopped chicken and mashed potatoes today and it just didn't taste like I thought and remembered that it would. I tasted some of my son's egg foo young gravy also and it tasted weird. I used to love that stuff. Anybody else note a change in your taste buds?
Tiffykins 673 Posted February 24, 2011 I would say about 75-80% of WLS patients experience change in tastes. If you've been low carbing it, especially through the liquid phase, ketosis is typically the culprit. You might also experience a metallic/copper taste in your mouth along with a "fuzziness" that you can't brush/floss away. Ketosis also causes funky body odor, and breath. Tongue scraper was the best thing for me to use during that stage. It took about 4-5 months for my tastes to return to normal. It changed back when I started adding in a few more carbs here and there to get my weight loss to slow down. It's pretty common for sweet things to become totally disgusting, and you may experience a heightened sense of smell as well.
Rootman 1,101 Posted February 24, 2011 Yep, same thing here. A lot of things are really disgusting now. It really "helps" me NOT want to eat so I don't complain too much.
buchannon 17 Posted February 24, 2011 My tastes have definitely changed. Things I used to love like chocolate and chicken disgust me now. Things I thought I'd never enjoy like tea and veggies, I love now.
Connie31079 0 Posted February 24, 2011 The only thing I have noticed since my surgery is that I can't stand the smell of hamburger cooking anymore. Shortly after my surgery, my mom was frying herself a hamburger, and the smell of it cooking totally turned my stomach, and I used to LOVE cheeseburgers! They were my weakness! Now, no can do!! Which is probably a good thing!
