Note for Mexico newbies

I got home from having surgery at florence Hospital in Tijuana, Mexico on Sunday and I have some suggestions for you who are having surgery with Dr. Kelly.

The hospital is clean and nice but here are some suggestions, they helped or would have helped me:

Ask your driver to stop at Walmart and buy yourself a foam mattress pad. The beds are old and very uncomfortable. Trish went out to buy me one but it would be faster to take it with you.

Take a robe or pajama bottoms. You will need them to walk the hospital halls.

Make sure your room has a recliner or buy a double size foam pad for your guest. Their beds are very hard.

If anethesia makes you sick, take your own supply of phenegran or something. Dr. Kelly uses Zofran (it didn't work for me). He also does not use narcotics so if you need something strong you will need to ask him for it. I didn't experience any pain at all.

The hospital does have Vonage but some rooms do not have phones. Make sure you ask for a phone so you can call home if that is important to you.

You do get some San Diego channels on the television so you don't have to be completely bored to death.

So, why are there so many people going or have gone to Mexico? Just curious.

I had to go to Mexico because my insurance wouldn't pay and I couldn't afford to do it in the States.

Did everything go well? I would be so scared to go to Mexico right now, with all the violence being reported.

I totally understand about the money. I pray for safe travel to and from Mexico and for God's guidance for all involved.

For anyone going to Mexico to have major surgery, it is not an easy process. I juggled going for a long time but I couldn't get a vsg covered in the states. I wouldn't settle for less even though I could have got a gastric bypass. I put my foot down and said "no", and it also helped when the hospital I was planning on getting gastric with basically blew me off until they decided it was time to collect. The hospital was treating me like a dollar sign instead of a patient who had concerns and needs, I told them that I am going to get surgery and Mexico. I was worried about Mexico, I heard stories of violence, drug lords, gangs you name it, but the hospital is in a very safe area and I would not worry about your safety. When I came back from the hospital I was in shock of what I did, I couldn't believe I went to Mexico for major surgery but I am so very glad I did.

Like I say and let me be frank. You have to have huge balls to have major surgery in a third world country.

good luck to everyone, sometimes you just need a push.

Everything went great. I was never unsupervised or traveled anywhere without an escort - even when I went shopping. They took really good care of me.

What is the price difference in Mexico?

I went to Dr. Aceves in Mexicali and the price was $8750, but there are others in Mexico that are much cheaper.

That's good that your insurance covers it! Although honestly, I have felt more scared walking down the streets in New York than I ever felt in Mexicali. There are lots of misconceptions, but I cannot speak about the other areas of Mexico, because I didn't have my surgery in those areas.

Wow. $29,500. That is just crazy!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
