Here in Mexico with Dr. Kelly

Recommended Posts

Ok so I am here in Mexico and had surgery Friday 2-18. Woke up with the worst pain on my life and don't think my pain was mangaged that well. I did force myself to walk which was good ( I vomited at the nurses station ) but I kept going. I have felt better each day and have been enjoying my stay here. I did book through Sandy but it has been Trish taking us all around . I have not seen as much of her and Dr. Kelly as everyone else says they have but he had a family emergency Saturday. I found his son to be pretty impersonal though but not Dr. Kelly he is sweet. At this point I am noting but pleased with this and would do it all over again in a second. Sandy , Trish & Dr. Kelly have all treated me well. I can only speak for myself but this has been my experience so far .... Keep ya posted

That's fantastic that you are doing well!! I'm in the process of trying to get the sleeve done with Dr. Kelly. How was your experience planning everything through Sandy? I keep hearing to go straight to Trish but I was just curious. Hope you have a fantastic recovery and get to go home soon. One last thing, I'd really like to know how long they keep you before discharging you to go home. Thanks!!

I used one of Sandy's associates and found her to be very helpful. Trish will work with you no matter who you use to set everything up, she works for Dr. Kelly. I met Sadie while I was there, I had surgery the day before she did. I saw Trish a few times a day and she was there when I had my leak test. She shopped for me and my sister because we didn't want to get out. I have no complaints about her or Dr Kelly. He did have the emergency and had to fly out but was due back on Sunday. He called me on his son, Sam's phone on the way to the leak test. My first impression of Sam was the same as Sadie's but I learned it is because he does not speak or understand much English at all.

I stayed in the hospital 2 nights and at the hotel 1. I felt good enough to go back to San Diego on Saturday but Dr. Kelly asked me to stay at least one night at hotel just in case.

You will be happy with Dr Kelly. My first suggestion is to ask Ricardo (the driver) to stop at Walmart to buy a foam mattress pad before you get to the hospital, you will need it. My bed was like a bag of rocks. Take a robe or some pajama bottoms you will need them. Dr. Kelly does not use narcotics but can get them if you insist. I didn't need any pain medication but I can say that I really wish I had had some phenegran with me for the nausea. Take a small pillow to hold against your stomach in case of sneeze or cough and I used it on the plane home. Wear slip on shoes back to airport, bending over to tie your shoes is not comfortable.

Anything else you want to know about my experience, please PM me.

I am glad you are doing well. The pain in the first 2 days cannot be completely eliminated due to the gas pain (only goes away when you expel the gas) and the drain that makes things very tight inside and uncomfortable. These 2 cannot be managed with pain meds. As you start expeling gas most of the pain goes away. As soon as they remove the drain you feel a great relief and most of the internal discomfort goes away, you only feel your belly sore when you are getting up from bed or bending and so. I wish you a speedy recovery.

So Dr.Kelly uses NO narcotics?? I don't know how I feel about that. I take narcotics

for chronic pain management and I'm sure I have somewhat of a tolerance.i want

to know that they can be made available IFneeded. I don't want to have to beg or fight for

decent pain relief. I hope this won't be an issue. Chances are I won't need narcotics

anyway, but if I DO, I don't want to have any big problems getting them.

Congrats on your surgery! Glad you're doing well and hope you continue to do so.

My pain management was handled very well when I had my surgery and I enjoyed Dr. Kelly and his staff. I am not quite sure what kind of pain medication they gave me but it was given to me or a routine basis and my post surgery pain was very minimal, a common headache could be worse. I recommend Dr. Kelly to anyone, Sandy and Trish are good people also.

I had surgery with Dr Kelly and I DID receive pain mediation and was also sent home with some so I am not sure what you mean that he did not use narcotics. I was sent home with pain pills, acid reflux meds and antibiotics.

Never did I have a pain issue or feel my pain was not managed. In fact I did not want some of the pain meds that the nurses were giving me the second night after surgery and I had to argue with them a bit be cause they said they were ordered by Dr Kelly. I was in florence hospital and never felt my bed was uncomfortable at all - perhaps it was just luck of the draw????

You are correct Sam (Dr Kellys son) does not speak much English - that was never an issue for me as Dr Kelly, Trish and all of my nurses except one spoke perfect English. I don't think Sam ever really needs to have that much interaction - he did just fine with use when he took us shopping etc. Cute and polite young man in my opinion. I hope you each have a great recovery Mine has been textbook perfect thus far!

I had a bad reaction to the anethesia that caused 24 hours of dry heaving vomiting. While trying to explain to Dr. Kelly he misunderstood and thought I was saying that the pain meds weren't working and said that they don't use narcotics. The pain med he uses is Toradol.

I didn't need pain management. I literally had no pain. My sister was amazed. It never bothered me to get up and down out of the bed and the drain never bothered me. I had more interaction with Sam, Dr. Kelly's son, because Dr. Kelly had to go out of town on a family emergency and Sam removed my drain and took me to my leak test. I never felt him remove the drain, I did feel him snip the stitch.

My recovery has been amazing. I am back to work full time. The only problem I've have had is to remember to "eat" and drink.

Dr Kelly ROCKS!!!!

Does Dr Kelly not give meds for nausea? Nausea is a commom side effect of this surgery. I would want it controlled as much as the pain. Does anyone know if it's legal to take these meds with you to Mexico? Would probably need to be in liquid form.

Oh, hello everyone, new to this site but not new to researching WLS or drs. I have been on OH for 6 yrs or so but mostly a chronic lurker. Thanks for sharing your info and experiences. So far i like the set up of this site since I am usually on my iphone reading.

Thanks,

Kelly

I know the nurses give you something for nausea, every time I felt some I would hit the nurse button and the nurse would come in with her bad English and say "nausea". I don't know what they gave me but it worked pretty good.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
