Surgery last Tuesday and weighed in 17lbs down today

Recommended Posts

Yesterday was probably the toughest day since we went out of the house to an outdoor mall. I could smell all the foods and think about al the food I used to eat. I also was reminded that those habits are what got me to 289. I am 5 days out from surgery and had strained clam chowder from one of the restaurants. My wife laughed and said we are going to save a lot of money since I don't drink or eat all crazy anymore. Five days after surgery my digestive system is working fine, I can take liquids down a lot better, I am still slightly sore around my stomach and I was pleasantly surprised to be down 17 pounds! I haven't taken any pain medication since the first day of surgery either! I am starting to believe the first day of hell is going to be worth it. Is it to early to start working out in the gym or getting on the elliptical?

Congratulations on your weight loss so far! It definatly feels good to see it start to go down! Im not sure about the exercise part also keeping in mind everyones bodies and experiences are different. I know I was also told to take it easy not lifting stretching or over doing it for at least 4-6 weeks.. But then again depends on your Dr.

I was told walking was ok - but no lifting anything more than 10 lbs for the first 4 weeks. Just had my 4 week check up today and am down 35 lbs!! YAY! :) [Now I have to figure out how to update my signature. lol!] They told me today that I am completely unrestricted for any type of exercise, and that I should be doing at least 20 minutes a day - switching b/t aerobic and weight lifting.

Hello Papi Chulo,

Congrats on your surgery! It will definitely be worth the first few weeks of pain and any kind of misery you might go through at that time.

As far as exercise it's best to take it easy for the first 6 weeks. Walking is fine, but I think pushing yourself on the elliptical might be a bit much right now. That's good though you are ready and willing!! There will be plenty of time once you're completely healed to get on the Workout Wagon.

For now, rest, sip and walk!!!

B)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
