Eating mushies feels like swallowing glass - normal?

Recommended Posts

I'm migrating into mushies phase, but it hurts pretty badly when hitting my stomach. It gurgles for a good HOUR trying to recover, and it feels like I ate some glass shards. Is this normal? If so, how long does it take the body to adjust to mushies?

I ate some tuna salad and low fat cottage cheese (about 1/2 a cup total between the two). I drank no Water 30 before/after, and I'm taking my PPI (Nexium) right on schedule 2x per day (8am and 7pm).

thanks!

I had major gurgling for a couple of months. It was so bad I couldn't eat in front of other people. As for pain, I would get that is I ate too fast. Eat about 1/2 (or less) of that and wait 15 minutes before eating the other 1/2.

I started mushies a week ago, but I haven't tried tuna. I've eaten well shredded chicken, scrambled egg, ground sausage, soft cooked veggies and cottage cheese. I would never say I felt anything like shards of glass. Are you sure you are chewing your food till it's like applesauce consistancy before you swallow? Also, could you be taking too big of bites?

I always kept in mind that my stomach is not nearly healed and that I needed to be very gentle with it. Don't want any leaks here!!! You'll have plenty of time later on to eat more normal bites and not need to chew your food to death, but for now you need to baby your stomach till it heals.

Enjoy your mushies and I hope things go better for you today!

How does your stomach react to say yougurt or pudding. I have heard that if you go into mushies and it doesn't agree with you then back up a couple of days. If your not having problems with thick liquids then stay on them for 2 or 3 days then go back to mushies. Anyway in doubt always call your doctor..

No it should not be painful, but each sleever has different reactions. Try going back to soft foods for another week and then try again.

Ouch! Doug, that sounds awful. Can you get a hold of your dr. asap? I don't think that sounds normal (or fun!) I hope you are ok.

My NUT's advice during mushies was only to replace one or two shakes a day with a new food, and only introduce one new food a day. My mushy list was REALLY small. It was refried Beans, cottage cheese, yogurt (I always do greek for 2x the protein), egg beaters (NOT real eggs yet) and SugarFree pudding (that you can add Protein Powder to for more protein.) I did those 5 foods for two weeks, before moving on.

Keep us posted...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
