Compression Garments

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I'm relatively new to the boards but have been snooping around for a while. I'm getting sleeved on Feb 24th and am uber excited about it =)

Anyway, my boss (who is actually very supportive of what I'm doing) is a physical therapist who specializes in lymphedema treatments. She told me to wear compression garments head-to-toe at all times as quickly as I can post-op to prevent the saggy skin syndrome. She said her sister had bypass and lost close to 300 lbs and because of wearing the garments, only had about an inch of pinchable skin at her belly after all was said and done. I thought that was quite amazing. Has anyone had experience with this? Because of how fast our bodies change, I was trying to find cheaper alternatives than the actual post-op compression suits that cost $100 plus. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance! smile.gif

I recently consulted a surgeon about excess skin on my arms. The damage is already done in my case, but he said to use compression garments when I excercize, especially high impact. He said the jarring of impact yanks the skin away from the body and can tear at the connective tissue. Hmmmmm this is a very interesting topic.

by the way.... I just wrap my arms in ace bandages when I run.

That was funny BBJ! You made my day with that comment.

I think I will check into compression garments to help my skin as I loose the weight. Thanks for the information Stcyt!

I don't think compression garments can help that much if you've been huge and lose a ton of weight - if skin is stretched, it's stretched.

Skin is pretty resilent and can bounce back over time depending on your skin type. There is a chance that skin will tighten up it may not be as fully as one would want.

As you state if stretched skin is stretched then all pregnant women after giving birth would have a huge flap of skin left from the pregnancy that would never go away and well I have seen several women who have lost all the baby wieght and their skin is just as tight as before. Just trying to put it in perspective.

Yep- It helps it from just hanging- therefore heals faster and less stretched over the time of loosing it- especially if you are also working out- - the "bouncing" isn't so much so that the skin does stay in place.

when I was researching compression garments for possible arm lift (if only I could afford it) the advertisements said that the garments were intended for people post-plastic surgery or post bariatric surgery....hmmmmm

This is very interesting. I wonder if this thread might be better in the post-op section.

Any ideas where to get decent priced garments? I did a search and the lowest price I found for stomach and thighs was 75.00 and If you go through a few of them that adds up in a hurry.

I think plain ol' Shapewear would work, Myrori. You can probably get a tummy/thigh shaper for like $25 at a low-end department store like Sears.

Hey guys,

I actually found some cheaper options at Wal-Mart. I found some Starter brand compression shirts in the men's department for working out in both long and short sleeves for only $10 ea. I also ordered the high-waisted leggings, the arm shrug, and 3/4 length toning top from Maidenform that I thought were very decently priced (way less than the labeled post-op garments).

Hope this helps!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
