How long do you carry on with protein shakes for?

Recommended Posts

Sorry about this but my knowledge of Protein shakes is pretty limited as neither my doctor or nut suggested Protein Shakes for my liquid diet- i was just suggested slim fast and Soups. Most of my research has been from here and I'm now purchasing the optimum nutrition 100% whey in chocolate.

I am 6 weeks out and wondering if people, past the liquid stage, still continue with their shakes?

My main motivation for doing this now is finding my food alone is giving me little Protein, even with eating mainly ham, tuna, cheese etc. it's maximum 30gprotien as I'm eating tiny morsels of food.

I'm hoping to take 1-2 of these servings per day. Does that sound about right?

At 12 weeks I still have one shake three or four times a week. I just don't like eating Breakfast, and it helps me get in my fluids. I would say do it until you can eat enough other foods to get in 60-80 grams of Protein. Everyone heals differently, and our sleeves are different sizes. I can eat way more than many at 12 weeks. I was getting 40-60 grams of protein from food at 6 weeks. I don't like when docs/nuts/good intentioned friends try to make me fit in their boxes. I listen and then do what is right for me.

try to get high Protein food like granola, nuts, dairy products into your food. I also love edamame (soybeans). They are high in protein and a nice snack.< /p>

My Doc and Nut say to use Protein drinks as long as you need to. I try to get in as much Protein from real food, but the drinks really help me keep the grams up where I need them, and also offer a meal when nothing else is available.

I am just about 14 weeks post-op and I still have to supplement everyday. I have tried many times to get a full 60g+ of Protein through foods but I just can't eat enough!

My dr. is very much against Protein Shakes past the 6 week mark. I still use them a couple of times a month, just when I'm running out the door and don't have time for a proper meal. I do get 60-90 grams of Protein strictly from food. I use greek yogurt, lots of tuna, chicken, steak, egg beaters, etc. I eat about every 2-3 hours just to fit it all in, even though I'm not hungry, but it's the only way I can get the required amt of protein in one day.

I'm almost 8 months out and still have at least one Protein drink a day. My surgeon doesn't think I should still need them, but I told him I wouldn't get in a decent amount of Protein otherwise. My sleeve is undergoing what seems to be another size adjustment in the last couple of weeks and I'm eating a little more than I could at 6 months. Even by the 6 month mark, there was NO WAY I could eat enough food to get in 60 gm of protein. Sometimes, I don't even get in 60 with a Protein Drink included.

This is mostly due to a small capacity in my sleeve, but also due to the fact that I am determined to eat like a normal person sometimes. I want a few bites of a potato with my steak, a few bites of crackers with my tuna, and a few bites of bread with my burger. (When it comes to bread, it's literally like 2 bites.) But, at least I feel like a normal person when I eat. In exchange for that normalcy, I drink a Protein Drink - usually for breakfast since my sleeve doesn't tolerate food well in the morning.

I'm slowly reaching the point where I can see that I will be able to get enough protein through natural food sources, but I intend to keep some type of drink at the ready at all times for when I have a low protein-eating day. I talked to an insurance case manager recently who was 4 years out from the sleeve. She said she still uses Protein drinks occasionally for when she doesn't get enough protein on a particular day.

Athletes and bodybuilders use protein supplements all the time - who's to say we can't use them as long as we want to?

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
