Any foods that you can NOT have after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I know about the liquids, mushies, etc, but I'm talking about a year, two years down the road. I thought I read somewhere that you cannot have red meat. Is that true? Obviously I'm in the initial stages and haven't met with a nutritionalist or anything yet, as I'm sure he/she would go over this stuff with me.

Just thought I'd ask though.

Thanks!

Hello Melissa,

I do not eat red meat, but it is by choice only. I could have red meat if I want, and I've had it a few times since surgery. I never had any negative reaction from it, other than I notice I gain a little when I eat it (so I don't eat it anymore ;) ) I'm 5 months out. So no, red meat (per my surgeons instructions) is not off limits.

That being said, you should definitely follow your surgeons guidelines. However, if you are wondering why this is, there is nothing wrong whatsoever with asking the reasons behind his advice. :)

Good luck!!

I eat huge amounts of red meat over a weekly period. It's my go to Protein source, and NO, there is not one single food that I can not eat. I literally do eat anything and everything just in moderation and smaller portions.

Literally, nothing is off-limits.

I just talked to my Surgeon and NUT about this last week after seeing people say things about not eating coconut and other things but both my Surgeon and NUT say there is NOTHING that is off limits unless my own personal body doesn't agree with it! Like Ice Cream doesn't agree with me so I'll be staying away from it!! LOL

Also I eat A LOT of red meat and also a lot of chicken! Protein baby!!!

I'm 7 months out and the only food that doesn't work well for me so far is Pasta, very uncomfortable feeling. I haven't tried rice yet, or soda so those may turn out to be unfriendly. Of all the Proteins, red meat keeps me satisfied and full the longest.

I have read through that post and that is what happened to someone yes but doesn't mean it will happen to everyone. I will continue to follow the plan that my surgeon and NUT have set forward for me!

I am so happy to know that red meat is OK for almost everyone!! I was sleeved 22 days ago, and I was worried never to enjoy steak again. My brother's friend had a DS done, and says he can't eat it anymore. But I was kind of hoping that that's b/c he had so much other work done. I think I gonna try a nice juicy (albeit small!) steak as soon as I'm unrestricted (March 6th or something like that) I am not big on coconut, or celery - so I'll be careful with those, but sounds like it might be individualized anyway... :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
