Hi! I'm a newcomer to the forum.....

Recommended Posts

I have been researching lap-band surgery and have found that there is so much information both positive and negative that I am getting discouraged. :o Since I don't have insurance, and will be self pay, I have been looking into having my lap band surgery done in Mexico. I have been impressed with what I have read about Dr. Rumbaut, Dr. de la Garza, and Dr. Ortiz. I have inquired with each and have been given names of local doctors that will do the fills. I haven't inquired if these doctors will see you in case of an emergency.

Can anyone give me any advise on each doctor? I live in Mississippi and have looked into costs of airline tickets. It is closer to fly to San Diego than to Monterrey, but then you have the long trip across the border and to Monterrey you fly right into the city. Dr. de la Garza has a special price including airfare as long as it doesn't go over $500.00, then you pay the excess.:o

I have read from some of the members of this forum that they have found resonable prices in the states. I plan to have my surgery, if I qualify, in the next couple of months. I am 31 and have been obese all of my life. I have tried many diets and pills, only to regain my weight back plus more. Having married 2 years ago I would like to have a baby. I know losing weight will enable me to have a safer pregnancy. Please, can anyone give me some advice on this doctors I have mentioned as well as resonable priced and experienced doctors in the states. Some positive imput wouldhelp too. Does everyone experience complications after surgery?:help:

Thanks,

Jenna

Hi Jenna,

Welcome to LBT! I don't have any info on doctors in Mexico since I had my band done in Idaho. I do know that there are centers/doctors in Salt Lake City and somewhere in Oregon that will do the procedure for a lot less than mine was. It seems like I remember about $12,000 to $13,000 which is half what it cast here.

It sounds like you are doing pretty thorough research. My responding to this thread will bump it up to the top and maybe you will get more responses from other's who used those doctors. I know there are a lot of them.

Good luck!

Jena, Welcome to the lapband board from Texas. Please don't get discourged. I kind of felt the same way after reading some of the complications and that was the message someone sent me. The complications are a very small precentage of all the people that have a lapband. I am two months out and haven'nt had any problems at all. My weight is falling wonderfully and I would do in again in a heartbeat. Don't know anything about your other questions as my insurance covered mine here in Houston, but we have lots of people that have had it done in Mexico and the states that are self pay so I am sure you will get your answers. Good luck to you.:o

Hi Jenna,

Monday I am going to Puerto Vallarta Mexico to get Banded by Dr. Joya his website is www.drjoya.com It cost me $8000 for airfare, surgery, and stay at hotel after. I did a lot of research too and found that he had a lot of great referrals and he was more affordable then others.

I'll keep you posted!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
