My name is Lysa and I am a professional, wife and mother of 2 boys (ages 5 & 7). I had my Gastric sleeve surgery on 12-28-2010. On the day of surgery I weighed 237lbs. This morning 2-11-11, I weighed 218lbs. I should be proud, but I am not. I feel like I have not dropped the kind of weight I should.

During the first month of recovery I felt amazing. I was loosing weight almost daily and health wise I felt rejuvinated. Now, the scale seems to be stuck. I have had headaches and feel tired. But I know I am to blame. I have not been doing my 60g of Protein and have been slacking on my Vitamins. Eating is not bad, but I guess I could be more focused. I did start the gym, so that should help.

Should I be mad at myself or will the weight come off over time? I feel like I should get rid of the scale, because loosing weight daily is not a realistic expectation. My clothes fitting better, that is realistic.

I am interested in talking to the community and reading how your journeys were or are going.

Hi Lysa! Welcome! :)

Congratulations on your weight loss!

The first month EVERYONE drops weight really fast and the the subsequent months we all drop slowly but steadily. Some weeks I have lost only 1/2 pound. There have been weeks when I have not lost at all. The thing about weight loss, even with weight loss surgery, is that our bodies don't lose it steadily -- wouldn't that be wonderful if we did? :)

Usually it's in a stair-step kind of way, we lose some, then not, lose some then not. That's OK!! It's normal.

The thing that a lot of us forget is that we should be really focused on the process, not the scale or our weight. And what I mean about this is that: 1) are we eating all our Protein and our calories; 2) are we drinking all the Water we need to be drinking - 64 oz.; 3) are we doing some form of exercise? That's it. And if we do the process, we will get there! Swear to God!

Now, some of us lose slower than others, but that's ok too -- as long as we incorporate our new diet and our new lifestyle into our lives, we can be assured that our sleeves will work, eventually!

We have to remember it's not a race, it's a lifetime! :)

(And believe me, I'm writing this for me too -- I forget this allll the time!)

So, chin up!! You're doing great!! Just keep on, keeping it on!! :)

Welcome Lysa! Congrats on your decision AND your weight loss.

You are stuck at what is called a plateau or a stall. It WILL happen from time to time. Your body and brain are trying to make adjustments to conserve the fat that it has packed away for so many years, hormones and metabolism are desperately trying to keep the weight ON while you want it OFF.

Don't be mad at yourself, just keep on keeping on. Stick to your diet. Remember Protein first then produce then carbs if there is any room left. Measure your portions and stick to them and them only.

You will start to loose again.

Welcome Lysa!!! Congrats on your weight loss!

On the day of surgery, I weighed 242. At my second follow-up visit with the surgeon's office (about 5 weeks post-op), I had lost 22 lbs. I asked the PA if I was "on track" with weight loss. She said I was a bit ahead of schedule. I was told that they anticipate an average of 10 lbs per month with some months being more - some much less.

I've had two stalls - just finished being stuck at 212 for about 12 days. Then yesterday, I'm a pound lighter..and today, a bit more. I can tell a big difference in my clothing so I'm not so stuck on the number on the scale. Of course, I am really pleased about the change in my need for or lack of need for diabetes and high blood pressure medications.

Since I was cleared to eat regular foods, I've found there are days that I can eat more than other days. I try to plan my menus, but I've found that I am not always in the mood for a particular food or flavor. We're told to eat 3 times a day, but that doesn't mean you're limited to 3 times a day. I'll have a bit of something extra in between meals. I'm always trying to get in extra Protein and Fiber. I'll have Jerky, yogurt with granola, almonds, fruit, or a portion of a Fiber One Bar. I'm recording everything I eat - and average between 700 - 900 calories a day. I'm trying to stay low sugar, but I'm not necessarily low on carbs. I have to remind myself to take my Vitamins - I've never been consistent before now - but I know how important it is to my overall health.

We're all in the same boat but we're different - you'll find the right combination of food for you. If you are taking the recommended Vitamins and still experience weakness - please discuss with your nutritionist.

You're doing great! Stay motivated! Again, you're among friends!

This is so true! Though I do weigh very often, I think it has more of a positive effect on me rather than negative. But, because I trust in the process I roll with it. I know it will happen. I truly am a slow loser in comparison to many others who are sleeved, but I've made peace with that. The fact is IT IS happening! I'll get there when it's my time to get there. My weighing ensures that I continue to do the right things, but if my scale doesn't move for awhile - I either need to shake things up if its there too long, or just trust that it will move eventually.

:) Patience and positivity is a must!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
