Hairloss

Recommended Posts

Well.....I can top everyone in that I am almost 4 years out from my sleeve and my hair has never been the same, no matter what I've tried..... I got all of my Protein, took Biotin, etc. and I lose way more hair than I did prior to surgery. It is worth it of course. I never had a big, thick head of hair so now I have to wear it short. What no one seems to ever mention is that fat produces estrogen and by losing alot of weight your body is producing much less estorgen naturally and hormonal changes can cause Hair loss as well. I don't know if it is directly related or not but I would bet on it. I had a full hysterectomy at 38 and for several years was overweight and never had one night sweat until I got thin....

I think the hair loss is from many different things related to WLS.

Everyone is different, but for ME, I don't think it is the lack of Protein at all. Back in the day when Atkins was at it's height of popularity, I went low carb (almost NO carb) and lost 30 pounds in 30 days and within a couple months, I started losing my hair by the handful and you could see my scalp. It was terrible. There is no stopping it, as I took every Vitamin known to man. It just has to run it's course.

My point being, since I was on Atkins, I was getting PLENTY of Protein as that is all I was eating!

So, I think any kind of "diet" change will cause Hair loss if it is extreme enough. Calorie restriction is just one of those things our bodies would rather not have happen!!

Luck I think you are thinking a little backwards. Fat does NOT produce estrogen, fat can STORE estrogen. This normally "buffers" the estrogen by releasing it when the ovaries are not producing it. It can also cause crazy (did I actually say crazy  ) mood swings when a female looses weight.

Luck, I don't doubt that you have experienced what you say you have but don't forget to factor age into the equation. You are older now then you were then and YES sometimes these things happen like a rush of wind - seemingly all at once.

Yep I have heard from long time sleevers that it happens around 4 to 6 . I heard that your hair does grow back but thins out quite a bit..

uh oh.... I love my hair and it's not thick at all. Looks like I'll be reconsidering WLS!!! -NOT!!!! As long as the hair grows back, then I'll be ok with losing a little volumn! It'll be the price to pay to be healthy for my family!

I am 3 and a half months post op and I am also having Hair loss. Everyone says they don't see it but I do! I notice the amount of hair in the drain when I Shampoo and the amount in my brush when I comb it. I have even resorted to tons of hair serums so it doesn't tangle and make me have to rip out more hair when I brush. I wear the wet curly look so I don't have to comb as often and I am so scarred to go bald.. I had really long thick hair before surgery now it is long and not thin but not thick.I know I don't get all my Protein in but I don't think I ate that much protein before surgery either.... I don't know.. all I do know is I am loving the results I am seeing from this surgery so I guess it will fix itself in the end...

If any of you have a Sally Beauty Supply store in your area, pick up some liquid Neutral Protein Filler. It repairs damaged protein bonds in the hair. Hairdressers typically use this when coloring damaged hair to prevent breakage. I pay $6.50 for a 4-ounce bottle.

Your adrenal glands produce androgens and fat cells/tissue convert androgens to estrogen and that is what I meant so no, don't have it backwards. My neice, who is an OB/GYN explained this to me when I questioned her about it. You are correct, fat also stores estrogen.

I started losing hair about 4-5 months post-op and did so for about 4 months. Now all my new growth is gray - but at least I've got a bunch of short wiry gray hair growing in! I work from home so I could get away with washing less often. That seemed to be all I could do though - took Biotin, bought a fancy growth serum/shampoo combo, ate all my Protein but could see no difference. Nothing but time will really help...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
