Well I've been hanging out reading for a while and now.....here I am waiting for approval from insurance for VSG. Now all these questions arise again....

1. Should I? What if something goes wrong? What if I have major stomach problems for the rest of my life because of this surgery?? (diarrhea, vomiting, etc...)

2. What about the wrinkly, saggy skin? (my skin doesn't snap back as before since I'm 51 now)

3. Will my hair grow back?

4. Does having the VSG change our labs? (blood work) Are we anemic (etc... ?

5. Wish I could lose a bit slower so I won't have to explain to everyone that I am "not sick". Only my husband knows I'm having the surgery.

Thank you for taking the time to listen to me. I'd appreciate any words of encouragement or discouragement. If there is something I have not thought about or should add to my list of growing questions, feel free to let me know.

It's wonderful to have this site. I appreciate everyone on here in making an informed decision for myself.

Female, Age 51, 207#, 5' 3.5", need to lose 30 -40 pounds to get rid of meds Goal is to lose 72#

Ask your Dr or Nut about the problems with acid reflux and vomiting. The sleeve can increase this...

I feel you on the doubt and questioning your decision. I am about 2 weeks from surgery and I keep tossing those same questions around. However, I have a few other questions that I like to remind myself of whenever I'm doubting my choice:

  1. How long can I realistically expect to live at my current weight? You typically don't see very obese people over 65.
  2. What will my quality of life be if I don't lose weight? I dread flying, going to an amusement park, meeting strangers, eating out, going to any event where the seat might be too small or the chair too weak, etc.
  3. Will I let fear keep me from changing my life for the better?

All of your worries are ligit, and I think we all have them. In the end, you have to weight the pros and cons and make your own choice. Yes this surgery has some risks, but so does everything else in life. Best of luck with your decision.

Thank you very much for this information. I just asked my doctor about this and he said "yes" the sleeve can cause this. I do have gastric reflux now (due to injury from lap band erosion). Well now I need to decide if I am willing to take the chance on this getting worse or maybe staying the same. ?? What to do :) ??

So many decisions..... I appreciate your honesty and thoughtfulness to me.

And thank you too, ILKrista, you are so right on everything here. Thank you for the good wishes and the same to you. May we do the right thing and be healthy and happy.

For the acid reflux, they actually found a hiatal hernia which they repaired at the time of the sleeve. Since then I have not had a single bout of reflux or nausea or vomiting. I do take now prilose OTC-I was on liquid nexium for the first 2 months but insurance changed and it was too expensive to continue. I am so happy that I had the sleeve. They actually found benign polyps in my stomach that was removed so I am grateful as this never would have been found if I did not have surgery and down the road would have led to possible more issues. I am healthier and so much happier.

I was worried about anemia and my blood count was normal at my 3-month check-up. I probably won't have another one until 1 year out, unless I start feeling funny. I take B12 and Iron maybe 2-3 times a week.

Re: saggy skin, yeah, it's not esthetically pleasant, but someone who's slim with sagging skin will still look fine in clothes, whereas someone who's obese won't have that advantage. Plus saggy skin is not a serious medical condition which will shorten your lifespan, whereas obesity is. Last but not least, if you are very big and expect major loose skin problems, there's always surgery for that.

Do you take a PPI? Some here have continued to take them long term. You do have to take Calcium citrate and sub lingual vit B12 if you do this...

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
