Missed period and thinning hair. Anyone else?

Recommended Posts

I am 4 months post op and have lost close to 40 pounds. My period did not come this month and last month my hair started to thin significantly.

I am taking my supplements as directed, but am curious if anyone else had an experience like this?

hair thinning is pretty much a norm of most invasive surgeries along with drastic dietetic changes, as sometimes is the missed period.

Please consult your surgeon or regular doc to make sure though, you may be anemic or deficient in some other Vitamin or mineral. The can run a blood panel to check, it's worth the peace of mind.

Hey Girl.... I've heard that Nioxin Shampoo & conditioner are really great products to use for thining hair, and have also read that not enough Protein in your diet can cause Hair loss after surgery. Oh, and they have some Vitamins at Walmart that are specifically to stimulate hair growth!! Check them out when you get a chance! I used to use them after I had my hair cut really short once, and the vitamins and shampoo combo really helped!! You can get the shampoo at Supercuts!!

The hairloss seems to be normal with this surgery - starts at about 4-5 months post op and lasts for about 2 or 3 months. Pain in the butt, but it's a small price to pay for the great weightloss. Can't offer anything as far as the missed period, if you are sure you aren't pregnant, and it doesn't straighten out by the next cycle I would call your doc and see what they suggest.

Hiya newmoo...

yep on both accounts.!!

I started to lose hair around 3 1/2 mths but got really bad about 5mths ... I am 7mths now and there is hair growing back but it is coming out albeit slower... I have no bald patch and my hair dresser said that it isn't as bad as I think! I have had a much shorter cut done to get me through the next 6mths or so though, but now I have a slimmer face it looks quite nice!

My periods are all over the place, I was hoping my cycle would be back to normal once the weight started to come off... but not so far!!

Hello Newmoo;

4+ months out and thought I had dodged the hair loss bullet everyone talks about. DARN But, I clean more hair off my clothes, out of my hairbrush, sink, drain, floor, vaccum, washer, dryer lint trap than is on my soon to be DH head. Have taken right Vitamins & bioten whole time. Not happy to hear this gets worse until 7 months out, yikes. But, I would rather be bald than the other option (presurgery). Let me know if you find a miracle.

i have pcos and so my period has never been normal but i am now 5.5 months post op and it seems to have started to get a little more normal. i get mine about every 5 weeks or so. the Hair loss sucks! it actually has made me cry! i had nice thick hair and now i think that its lifeless and limp and thin and gross! i can see my scalp through my hair when i wear it down and i have never been able to.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
