pinkadot07 0 Posted February 6, 2011 Hello all, So I have heard a lot of conflicting things about alcohol after surgery. I am almost two years out now and doing great, but I've alwasy had the lingering question about drinking... I am not a drinker at all. I never drink in my day to day live. I am on vacation right now though in europe and am supposed to go to Brussels in a few days. Naturally I want to try the beer there (I have never had beer) BUT it's carbonated so is it a no no? I used to drink soda all the time and was told after surgery we cant deal with the bubbles so I gave it up and haven't touched it since. Please let me know if I should just stay away or if it would be ok... Random, but what drinks are good in general? that you can handle after surgery? It might be kindof hard to order specialized drinks here....ideas? Thanks.
chicagoanthony 1 Posted February 6, 2011 Hey, congrats on your success! Beer, ah beer. Well my nutritionist and surgeon say the following Carbonated beverages should be avoided at all costs because they have the ability to stretch out your stomach OVER TIME. This translates too having a beer once in while wont do anything adverse. But as a patient 2 years out, you know about the gas These surgeries are meant to enhance life, make it more enjoyable for a longer period of time. Enjoy life -Tony P.S: Have your beer youll be just fine (non medical personal opinion)

Enjoy life -Tony Tony..... what a great way to look at things. Your so right.... surgery is meant to enhance our lives. I am 9 mos out and I drink once in a while. Once in a great while I will have a beer... but honesty... its not as good as it used to be. I end up drinking real slow because of the bubbles... but thats probably for the best. I drink a lot of vodka stuff.... vodka and fresca mostly... I cant drink a fresca straight from the can (too bubbley) but by the time you add a little vodka and a little of the ice melts alot to the carbonation goes down. This would be true of vodka soda as well. which you can probably get easily anywhere. I have to be careful because I get drunk kind of fast... the combination of an empty stomach and the alcohol moving through my stomach and straight into the intestine quickly. I'm still wanting to loose 8 lbs so I stay away from too much... its not really the extra calories in alcohol I worry about... I don't really consume that much... its that I tend not to work out the next day Have fun.... let go you have done great P.S: Have your beer youll be just fine (non medical personal opinion)
MINI-Me 196 Posted February 9, 2011 I don't like beer due to the carbonation and how filling it is. Wine is a different story. I drink it & my nutritionist is fine with it at this point in my journey. One fear is transfer addiction - meaning trading one addiction (food) for another (alcohol). alcohol goes down easy & is not filling - so just be careful how much you allow yourself. A glass in the evening is fine ... A couple glasses with friends is fine ... Overdo it? Not so fine. Besides wine ... most mixed drinks go down fine. Margaritas are high sugar, but one or two on vacation is perfectly acceptable. You can also try Screw Drivers, Rum and Coke (hardly any fizz is noticed when it's mixed like that), etc. Enjoy your vacation. Congratulations on your 2 years. Please feel free to stop by sometime and let us know what life is life for you at 2 years. How are you maintaining? Any "secrets of your success" for the rest of us?
